Great game my favorite 2-d one actually.
Updated OP with post-completion stuff. Loved the game.
I'm playing the og on my 3DS and it's goddamn brutal... Were ALL games this hard back in the 80's?! I don't remember them so hard...

No, Metroid belongs to the harder games. Although once you know your way around, it is a lot easier. Not just in the sense that all games become more manageable once you know what you have to do, it has a bigger impact than normal on Metroid. |
Ok, because I'm more or less just wandering around pretty clueless... I don't wanna look anything up just yet, I wanna play this game as I would have when I was a kid, but it's really challenging.... I've also bought MegaMan3 and LoZ: Link's Awakening, and both are pretty hard as well.

As Rol explained to me a few years ago, you can reload your save file after beating the game and the sectors are unlocked again.
There's a bunch of extra endgame puzzle rooms that require the speed booster/screw attack.

First time is very challenging, at least until you stumble across the screw attack. Being invincible and dealing damage in mid-air makes wandering through the countless corridors quite comfortable. That doesn't help with the bosses and metroids, but it's still the best power-up in the game. Mega Man 3 has medium difficulty, although the middle of the game presents a notable spike in difficulty. Like always, once you've figured out which weapons are effective against bosses, you have a lot less to fear. Link's Awakening is medium too, although the first boss is quite tough. |
My gods, those are MEDIUM hard?? I would have guessed they were hard games, and Ghost'n'Goblins were Brutally hard!

The first Mega Man game is hard. Zelda 2 is hard. But you are right, Ghost'n'Goblins is in a different league. |
How hard do you think most games of today are? :P

The ones I play are mostly medium, occasionally easy to medium, rarely medium to hard or outright hard. It would be a mistake to label new entries in long-running series as easy, because a lot of the perceived easiness stems from experience with the gameplay formula. If you watch an inexperienced player, you are reminded of your own struggles when you first played video games. The brutally hard games have died out, but that's a good thing. Their difficulty was rooted in poor game design, so nothing of value was lost. |
Yeah I guess you're right on both accounts.

I finished Fusion a few years ago, I remember that I really enjoyed it... enough so that I bought Zero Mission, which I haven't played yet.
Also that reminds me I should probably finish Super Metroid.
Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.
Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash
