Iwata took a 50% pay cut recently and Nintendo isn't in "going bust" levels of trouble - I'm not sure if it is as big a deal for a Japanese CEO to take a significant pay cut as it might be for an American one

The differance being that Nintendo has large cash reserves where Sony has little.

They were always in trouble and I am glad to see them making the hard cuts they need right now.

Even if Sony go bankrupt someone will buy the PlayStation brand given how successful it still is.

It will no longer go buy the name ♣Sony♣ Playstaion though.  That's of course if that was to happen.

If nothing else changed...same games, same developers etc., who would care if the name Sony was on it?!?

We are talking two different things.  You're talking Sony as a whole and I'm talking game division.  "Yawn"

Lol who cares about the ceo's getting a bonus cut? Those guys make a fortune anyway. Also, just because Sony as a whole isn't doing that great doesn't mean playstation is going anywhere. It's the thing that probably makes them the most money and it just shows how important it is for the company. With MS on the other hand Xbox is just a small portion of their business and it's far more likely that they would sell it off if it's not performing as the shareholders would have liked.

Did you just open the post and just decided to reply without even reading the article? It clearly states that even tho PS4 is doing well it is still trending behind compared to 6 years ago. And Sony as a whole cannot survive on Playstation alone. And even if PS could be on its own, without Sony to back it up it would fail to stay on its fit just like Sega did during their console years.

As long as it is profitable they can. Sony is in the process of spinning off it's departments that are creating drag and once they do they will begin to grow again as long as their positive sections continue to perform.

This kind of reminds me of the beginning stages of Sega and the Dreamcast fiasco, except for I don't think Sony will stop backing the PS4.

microsoft playstation? lol

Cutting costs wherever they can. Gotta be done I suppose.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Only 50%? Back in the days they would do sepuku :p

Honor. Something most big American corporations lost the understanding of. When companies are falling in America all you hear is about CEO's getting bonuses ever since the economic collapse. Kudos to Iwata and Hirai for both respectively taking pay cuts when their companies went through financial turmoil.

I just fail to see why we have to keep seeing articles like this on gaming sites. Sony is a huge company and they just aren't the brand anymore that they were in the Walkman days. TV's, pc's, phones audio and mediaplayers are all markets where Sony is getting it's ass kicked. However, this has nothing to do with the ps4, which is setting record numbers (even if it is trending behind compared to 6 years ago).

Like I said, Sony isn't going anywhere, they just need to cut some fat and get rid of some of their divisions. Any 6-year-old could have predicted that focussing purely on 4k tv's right now would be a bad idea for example. And of course Sony could survive on Playstation alone, hell Nintendo has done pretty good for themselves. It would just be as a different kind of company, more streamlined and with less of a focus on other consumer electronics.

But there is just no chance in hell that Sony will close it's doors in the near future and stop with the ps4 all together. It's far more likely that they will actually put more resources in the ps4, and I'm sure that they will come out swinging at E3, when it's do or die time for them.

...maybe because this is a gaming financials site.

Being based around sales numbers.

Quite honestly, we don't get half as many of these articles as we should for the big 3.
