The first game that came to mind was Xenoblade: Chronicles. I've never played it, but I'm sure it really deserves a ton of praise. Even still, best JRPG of the generation? Best JRPG of all time?

Yeah I hear that a lot too, yet to play it. I'm sure it's a great and I'll be getting it eventually but I somehow doubt it is the best JRPG of the generation, or all time. But you never know. Its definitely a bit overrated x.x

It def is.

Its def the best JRPG since FF7 if not since some great SNES jrpg.

But the problem is  if you think like "its the best jrpg in 20 years  lets see" then you will automatically be disappointed.  I expected nothing at all and was blown away.
When playing it I felt like I was 12 again and playing my favorite snes jrpg  and there was literally nothing that was annoying.

You can save whenever you want. You can change the ingame time to whatever time you want. "Oh this place would look aweseome at sunset" tada  you can make it sunset. At night the world is inhabited by other people than at day so you will meet new people with new quests etc.

Wandering around a huge field (without having seen a single loading screen for like 30 minutes) and after you walked up a hill you see that the mountain you saw in the far distance was not a mountain but a huge turtle with gras and trees on its shell thats moving REALLY slow.
Is just amazing.

The whole game is full of stuff to explore.

Super Smash Bros Melee. It's a downgrade from SSB 64 in every aspect and everyone says like it is the best of the series when it actually derailed it. SSB isn't a balanced game (indeed, few fighting games are). But SSB is fun, you have items, cool stuff to do and usually the better player will win. From Melee on, the levels became filled with shit trying to kill you, traps and items overkill. It's not a fight between 4 players, it's a survival to see who can endure the enviroment.

SSBM was hardly underrated or overlooked, it was one of the most hyped Gamecube games ever, and the best selling game on the console.

I'm also suprised to see a lot of Shadow of the Colossus in this thread too, the game sold quite well.

A friend of mine was saying this about COD when it first came out, and that it was in the shadow of MOH before turning into the behemoth that it is now. Of course I won't know since the last COD game I played was COD2 and I thoroughly enjoyed it more than any other shooter at the time. I'm unsure if it was "underrated" though, and this is for the series as opposed to a specific game.

Playstation = The Beast from the East

Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS

True. It's like many fighting games. The more characters you have, even if they're more or less just clones, the more levels, the more possibility the better the game in mainstream audience mind. Even if the core gameplay and balance are horrible.

Yes, it was more overrated. It's actually pretty difficult for a game to be underrated and then flip it and become completely overrated.

I don't think a lot of you guys (the OP included) understand what the word "underrated" means.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

Underrated: The Last Remnant
Overrated: Skyrim

Underrated: Arc Rise Fantasia
Overrated: Ocarina of Time

Just a few.

I'm not sure if that's what this thread is about. Are you saying that Skyrim started as underrated and became overrated or that it was always overrated? Because if it's the latter, I don't that that's what the OP is asking.

Mass Effect (Series)

It was never underrated.

Have people posting even read the title?

The OP gives a perfect example. I, personally can't think of a single one.
