The first game that came to mind was Xenoblade: Chronicles. I've never played it, but I'm sure it really deserves a ton of praise. Even still, best JRPG of the generation? Best JRPG of all time?

Yeah I hear that a lot too, yet to play it. I'm sure it's a great and I'll be getting it eventually but I somehow doubt it is the best JRPG of the generation, or all time. But you never know. Its definitely a bit overrated x.x

It def is.

Its def the best JRPG since FF7 if not since some great SNES jrpg.

But the problem is  if you think like "its the best jrpg in 20 years  lets see" then you will automatically be disappointed.  I expected nothing at all and was blown away.
When playing it I felt like I was 12 again and playing my favorite snes jrpg  and there was literally nothing that was annoying.

You can save whenever you want. You can change the ingame time to whatever time you want. "Oh this place would look aweseome at sunset" tada  you can make it sunset. At night the world is inhabited by other people than at day so you will meet new people with new quests etc.

Wandering around a huge field (without having seen a single loading screen for like 30 minutes) and after you walked up a hill you see that the mountain you saw in the far distance was not a mountain but a huge turtle with gras and trees on its shell thats moving REALLY slow.
Is just amazing.

The whole game is full of stuff to explore.
