Forums - Gaming - Underrated/Overlooked games that became overrated

...Why is everyone going so hard on this. All I said was that it was the first thing that came to mind. It looks like a game that looks like it cold be overrated and looks like it was once under rated. I didn't say one bit of critisism. I didn't even say it wasn't the best JRPG. I just begged the question. I literally couldn't be more clear with that post, and yet people act like I'm throwing fire at a game I've never played.

He made a topic and I offered some input. The only opinion in that post was "I'm sure it deserves a ton of praise." I swear, this community is so creepily sensitive.

Oh, and this isn't directed specifically at you, but it's annoying just how quickly people get butt hurt over literally nothing.

I was backing up what you said.  I was basically saying your comment is no different than the many number of people who praise games or bash games they've never played and people have no problem with those comments because they're popular opinion.  An example would be if I stated Xenoblade was amazing or White Knight Chronicles sucks, I'd have a lot of people agree with me more than disagree on both accounts, whether they've played the games or not, simply because it's popular opinion.  I thought WKC was good btw, just using the popular opinion as an example.

I agree with you about Final Fantasy 9. I feel like it`s starting to become the new `Final Fantasy 7` from the FF community (Although, FF9 is still a fantastic game). I think Earthbound is an `overrated` game, I had fun playing through the game and I enjoyed the story but I don`t get how it`s a life changer to people.

Ah, one of those threads where people call "overrated" games that other people loved but they personally did not.

I'll participate, too. I name whichever game you really like. That game, it's overrated.

I know lol that's why I said it wasn't directed towards you. The "specifically" probably didn't need to be there.

Final Fantasy IX is a good shout. It sold the least out of the PS1 FF games but fans seem to praise as if its the second coming. Actually, a lot of Final Fantasy games (VI, IX, X and XII) could probably fit in this as each new iteration leads to mass criticism from old school fans, but five years later you get a whole host of people loving the game and complaining about the following iteration.

I C O. Ico was overlooked back in the time. Then Shadow of the colossus came, nuked every gamer who played it and everyone begin to pay attention to the previous team's work. Ico got a bit of spotlight after that and suddenly ico became one of the most poetic, intelligent, thrilling game of all time. Problem is the game isn't at all.

Ico did not deserved to be completely ignored like back in the time, but that does not make it a good game. Shadow of the colossus is one of the best game of all time in my opinion, but Ico is way, way behind to me.

In second position came Jet Set Radio. The art direction of the game (design, music...) and the concept are perfect. But the gameplay kills everything, the game is rigid, kind of slow and frustrating. The game does sound and look good, but it plays horribly bad. And still people consider it a true masterpiece.

I played both Ico and SotC when they came out, they're still in my top 5 best games of all time. Ico over SotC. I did play both of them without the expectation of playing the best game in the world though. They are very different games, so I can see why some people prefer one over the other.

...That's stupid. It completely misses the meaning behind something being over rated. Your first line is in complete oposition of your second. Your second line is making it seem like the only reason people call a game over rated is because of the people playing and not the product. Your first line, correctly, states that "people call 'overrated' games that other people loved but they personally did not." That's the definition of over rated. The Last of Us is over rated because my personal opinion of that game is in negative contrast with the overall consensus of the game's quality and impact, not because I think it's "mainstream" of I'm "hipster" or I don't like/respect the kind of people who do enjoy this type of game.

Your retort is petty and misses the point of calling something over rated.

I agree with Earthbound.  Either these people really liked the real world look to it, which is the reason I like it as much as I do and it's still not even in my top 50 RPG line up, or they've played few games in  the genre.  Also before people reply to my comment of "few" they need to look what gen we're in and how many RPGs have been released.  You've played 30 RPGs?  Congrats, there's almost 30 games in the FF series alone.  There's hundreds of RPGs just on consoles outside of those.

I'm not sure where you got the idea I didnt like the game I mentioned. It's not my favorite Final Fantasy but definitely in my top 5. I'm sorry if you are taking the word "overrated" in a negative sense, as most people do. I'm not using it in a negative way, but couldn't think of a word that accurately describes what I was intending.
