Is it safe to say "We effing told them so!" in here? Damn, just a day ago there were still certain people on this website vehemently claiming that there is never going to be RoTR on PS4, using obviously smoke and mirrors statements from Phil Spencer as proof positive that RoTR won't be on PS4. So frustrating and nothing you say with logic, or point out the cynical nature of PR practices around these sorts of things, gets through at all. "It's a deal like DR3 and Ryse, therefore no PS4." And those people won't learn from this. The next time PR spin comes along they will still drink the koolaid.

A warning to us all though. Always be more wary of the PR spin coming out in favour of your preferred console. Being self aware, so to speak, is more important than finding gullibilities in other people. Especially when you want to point out their gullibilities.

Schadenfruede is really not justified here, since pretty much everyone's been screwed over with the RoTR mess, possibly with the exception of PC gamers. But I can't help but feeling a rather prolonged in your face moment, just because some people were so determined to convince everyone of the permanent console exclusivity.

I will probably get RoTR next November. But I've also been saying I will get Bloodborne and The Witcher 3, and I haven't done that yet, and I want to play those 2 games (and Uncharted, and TLOU2, and Ratchet and Clank) more than I want to play RoTR. So maybe 2017 is when I'll get it. And maybe, like TR 2013, I will only get it when it comes to PSN+ because I have no real room for it otherwise; now wouldn't that be an irony?

In Phil Spencer's defense, he specifically stated multiple times that it was a timed exclusivity deal. He just specifically avoided saying that it was coming to PS4, because he didn't have to. If it was only going to eventually going to come to PC, he would have said something like "the only console RotTR will be on is XBox." It's just that a lot of people were in denial.

But the good thing for Xbox owners is that they will almost certainly get to play the Final Fantasy VII Remake and will likely get to play No Man's Sky as well (I'm not sure exactly what the terms were for that game, as it seemed to change from a PS4 timed exclusive to a PS4 console and timed exclusive, or something).

Well it all depends on the extent to which Phil was the decision maker on how to spin this deal. Who thought it was a good idea to try to obscure the fact this was always a timed exclusive coming to PS4 and PC some time in 2016? If Phil wasn't the decisioon maker (or one of them) and just got told to spin as hard as he can, then sure I don't blame him for doing his job. But if he was in on the whole thing and supported that approach, he's as big of a dick as anyone in this debacle. You can be damned sure no one a CD or SE thought it was a good idea. They could see the shit flying at them from PS fans a mile off, and there's no way they wanted to piss of the player base that is the best bet for actually making this game profitable on its own merits. But would MS care if PS fans are pissed off with CD and SE? Not a bit. So this strategy is pure MS, and Phil is right there in the middle of things.  You can't put this one on Don Mattrick's legacy. He left too long before this deal was announced for him to have left Phil this particular pile of shit to try to make smell like roses. Phil can be credited with doing a lot to rehabilitate the XBox brand, but he's still a corporate shill at the end of the day. It is also clear that Phil was trying to encourage the view that the timed exclusivity only really confirmed a PC release in the future.

And we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that people like Yoshida are corporate shills too. If it suits their purposes to piss off a community of gamers they will, without a moment's hesitation or regret. I work as a regulator of corporate entities, and even the nicest of people who work in these corporations will crap all over you if they think it will make money, or beat the competition. When you get high enough up the corporate ladder it's nigh on impossible not to blacken your soul.

Am I being unself-aware? Am I in a Sony cult without realising it? Shit, I hope not. I certainly feel like I wouldn't give Sony a second thought if they went tits up, as long as I can get my console gaming needs met by someone other than Microsoft or Apple. I would hate to have to follow Naughty Dog into the jaws of one of those beasts. Thankfully that is probably not on the cards in whatever years remain to me as an active gamer. I swear I only have a Sony phone because at the time it was the best value for money that was not either Apple or Samsung. And it is my first ever Sony phone. And I only made my wife get a Z3 because of PS4 remote play. I swear there are legit reasons for all my Sony purchases and there is no slavish loyalty to the Sony name. Goddamit!

This paragraph is word by word exactly like my situation (except the part about phones - my wife bought Z first, and led me to buy Z1 after that).

TR situation is a mess, especially since it seems that eeeeeverybody knew it was coming to PS4 without a doubt.

I don't get it. Didn't everyone know it was a timed exclusive? What's the big deal?

I think the big deal is exactly that. Everyone knew is was timed and it would come to PS4 eventually. But certain segments of the gamer community actively sought to perpetuate the notion that it was [at least] permanently console exclusive to Xbox , cynically citing PR statements, particularly from MS, as a basis for maintaining a position that does not stand up to a moment's scrutiny.

I find it curious also that Sony seems to be more willing than MS to share 3rd party games with Windows these days. SF5 and Rocket League for instance.

But, note to self, it's time to...

Precisely. People swallowed the Ryse and DR3 deflection koolaid hook, line and sinker and obstinately refused to see what was blindingly obvious about all the PR double-speak. And now they have been made to look like fools by the company they so strongly defend. Well being a passionate advocate of any company is foolish, which is why I shun anything Apple related, I just hate the cultishness that develops around companies, but this was extra foolish. It was so damned frustrating at the time trying to talk sense to those people.

Am I being unself-aware? Am I in a Sony cult without realising it? Shit, I hope not. Another common thing I see naysayers do is citing Crystal Dynamic's quotes on Microsoft helping them with the development of ROTR as proof that a PS4 will never happen. "It's just like what Sony did with Bloodborne, so therefore, ROTR will never go on the PS4" (I'm paraphrasing). However, upon reading their quotes, their statements are really vague. "Helping with the deveopment" can mean anything. It can range from having your employees collaborate with the developers or just paying for the development costs. This is all PR speak and the point of PR is to spin. However, the naysayers take it at face value and refuse to decipher the PR jargon.

And I wholeheartedly agree with the company sycophantism. It's silly and at times, frightening. I'm primarily a Playstation fan, but if Sony screws up on something, I will call them out on it. For instance, I think the pricing for GOWIII Remastered is too high. I also grew up with Nintendo, but they started losing me when the with the Wii as I fell for the Appeal to Novelty.

I also find it amusing how the VGC "team" fought so hard against any mention of a possibility of PS4 version's existence.

To the extent that this news has not even been covered by their "news team" while covering many minor insignificant news at the same time.

Well I for one am particularly critical of VGC news being mere regurgitation of information from elsewhere. So I don't mind the news section not having followed this regurgitation trend in this particular case. But only on the condition that they eventually do write something about it. Hopefully as an examination of the whole corporate culture around exclusives. Analyse the shit that went down around this whole thing, not just republish an announcement that's been whizzing around the internet for the last 24hrs, or so. Add some value, not just recycled information for the clicks.

I big supporter of VGC dropping the scoring aspect from its reviews. Even though there are negatives to doing this, and of course Video games are not the only entertainment medium thay has review scores, I think it is over all a good thing. And with most reviews I read a bit then skip to the list of pros and cons. But at least the pros and cons list is more informative than a set of numbers which are then simplistically averaged. So I hope the level of maturity demonstrated in ditching scores for reviews bleeds through to their news department. I want our news to use the unique nature of this site (being focussed on sales data), to become far more analytical. Examine for instance the effect on sales of exclusives and timed exclusives, look at the financial cost/benefit. Don't just say "OMG! metgaton exclusive!!!11!1!, I'm wetting myself with excitement / rage" like everyone else.

I do agree there was some overreaction to mentioning possible (at the time) PS4 ports in certain recent threads. The potential for a PS4 port was always an underlying topic in any discussion about RoTR. Even a thread specifically about the game's technical performance brings up the topic of the ability of the developer to focus on just one platform (well 2 since it's on 360). Then it leads into, "well it was being developed on PS4 and PC until the exclusivity deal"...hello the door has been opened. You can't force a thread that's talking about a controversial game to stay within a narrow benign corridor of discussion. Threads meander all the time, a thread that stays tightly on a narrow topic doesn't live for long. If you want to stay "safe" when discussing a controversial exclusive then unfortunately that means taking it to the relevant "nation" thread. Basically like we're doing here, right now, with RoTR. Most of what we've written in the last few posts would cause a massive flame war in a general open thread, with many bannings of people on both sides of the debate.

I dunno if it's going beyond the realms of reasonable modding, but there are some threads which should be merged into the appropriate nation thread, esp if the OP wants dicsussion to be narrowly focussed with no tangential, but still related, discussion.

lmao at the thread title: 2016 Holiday exclusive. lol

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=221391&page=1

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but:
http://www.dualshockers.com/2015/07/24/danganronpa-ps4-virtual-reality-demo-for-project-morpheus-announced-screenshots-inside/

It's a bit weird, because I don't exactly know how virtual reality makes the trials any better, but whatever.

Hopefully, this also means that the three Danganronpae get ported to the PS4 as well. They're really fantastic games that often get overlooked, and I think a PS4 port would give them some more attention. Plus, the PS4 definitely needs some VN love.
