Somebody can add Nin/Xbox/Sony logos if they like lol

#1: MS (Piccolo Cause hes green) and Nintendo (Goku) unite against a common enemy: Sony.

Individually, Sony has no problems beating the both of them.

Gohan represents MS's money.

MS eventually wins by making Nintendo a subsidary and one of Sony's few profitable business ventures (Playstation) succumb to red ink that makes their overall company outlook even worse.

As a Xbox fan, I like the idea of Nintendo exclusives on MS hardware, with cutting edge MP features and top tier graphics? Sign me up.

I doubt the Japanese government would allow it, but surprisingly i would be ok with it.

At least there would be some exclusives on the X1 that i would actually want.

With that said... trying to predict the future of that merge is an exercise on disaster. Their cultures are far too different for that buyout to work. RARE triggers all kinds of alert buttons.

Because Sony is in much better shape then MS or Nintendo, they sure know how to flex their debt muscles.

Literally every console war ever.

nintendo will never sell its assets like that,

How do you know? There is not really precedents for this kind of thing.

they only way MS could buy nintendo would be a buyout.

A buyout is a lot more complicated, and would require MS investing in Nintendo rather than simply buying it.

also the OP question was if they aquired nintendo,  not nintendo's assets and IP's.   When people say one company aquired another its a buy out.

That doesn't make much sense considering Nintendo's assets are what it consists of.

and are you really suggesting that 5-10 billion in cash, bonds and investments doesnt ad much to its market cap?

It raises its stock value but not its market value. The shareholders own those investments/bonds hence they own that "cash"

MS would need a controlling stake which is even more unlikely than Nintendo as a whole being sold off.

Thus if MS was buying out Nintendo, then yes it then the cash reserves would be applicable, but only because it drives the stock price up. It has little to do with the market value directly, just like the stock price has little to do with the market value directly.

youve already agreed that we wouldnt ever see them liquidate its assets,  and now your argueing that we dont know that?     and at the end there you agree that the cash reserves would be applicable in that situation.

so now your trying to argue the semantics of what we are going to call nintendos value with or without its cash reserves?   or which is more likely, a hostile takeover or a 15 billion dollar company liquidating the only assets it really has that makes money (other than interest from investments) and than dissolving itself?

I wouldn;t buy their hardware anymore, but Metroid/Fzero/Zelda hold a special place. Would certainly buy them if it meant i didn't need seperate hardware.

That sounds extremely selfish of you and the rest of the people who see it that way ... If Nintendo games can't sell Nintendo hardware then what makes you think that their of any value ?

No no no. I agree that Nintendo wouldn't liquidate its assets.

But in the hypothetical situations of A. Buyout/Hostile Takeover or B. Selling of the company,

Nintendo's stockpiles/investments increase the stock price but not the market value so they are applicable in A rather than B.

If Nintendo was selling themselves off, they would liquidate their monetary assets such as investments, bonds, etc and pocket the money and then pocket more money from selling Nintendo. I mean if Nintendo wanted to sell off their assets why in gods name would they include their own investments driving up the marketprice? The only difference between selling it for 5 billion + cashing out the other 10 billion and selling it for 15 billion as a whole is that the first deal is a lot more likely to get bought sooner. This is why it doesn't apply to the market value "directly".

In case A  were MS is buying control of Nintendo through its stocks, then they are assuming the debt and stockpile of Nintendo, but every single share they buy will cost more because of the cash that Nintendo has.

Not to mention Japanese companies are notoriously hard to take over hostily especially by American Companies.

So its not truly semantic, there is a significant difference, and Nintendo selling the company is a lot more likely then MS hostily taking over it, even if these are 2 hypothetical "impossible" situations.
