Forums - Gaming - Your gaming television history

Through the years as much as my consoles have evolved, so have the televisions I play them on.

Television 1: 13" SDTV (Birth-1998)

Consoles: Atari 2600, NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis

The first television I played on was a secondary unit as the main television was for watching shows.  It was a white cube with buttons on top for a total of 13 channels, of course all but channel 3 (games) were static.  Hard to believe I sat on th eground playing on something smaller than my computer monitor.

Television 2: 27" SDTV (1998-2003)

Consoles: Sony PS1 and Nintendo 64

The hand me down that we use to watch shows on became my gaming set up in 1998 and I was thrilled to play old games on the "big" set up and experience the new systems as well.

Television 3: 36" SDTV (2003-2008)

Consoles: Sony PS2, Nintendo Gamecube and Microsoft Xbox

My first television on my own and what I played at university with the new systems. I thought I was hot stuff having something so large compared to what I grew up with.

Television 4: 60" HDTV (2008-Present)

Consoles: Sony PS3, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox360 and Sony PS4

My big jump into high definition and for me the biggest jump in television quality. After making this jumjp I do think I could ever go back in quality or size. For gaming it really brought into focus the details now possible in textures.

So, how about you? What did you play on? What do you play on?

Going to have to do some estimating since I got my first tv when I was 3 and SNES when I was 5

20" SDTV 93-98
SNES

I do not know if this was new or a hand-me-down. Was first used to watch movies on my VCR and then later it got used a ton on the SNES. Mario :)

26" SDTV 98-2001
SNES, N64, PS1

Bought new for me. Mainly played SNES and N64. I never cared for the PS1 much and still do not much to this day

36" 2001-2006
SNES, N64, PS2, PS3

Hand-me-down when my parents got another tv so I could have a larger one. God knows how many hours I put on this tv with the PS2. So many amazing games. I continued to play SNES and N64 for a while but the PS2 dominated once it released. Used my PS3 on this for about a month. Resistance Fall of Man!

32" 1080P LCD HDTV 2006-present (Still works like new)
PS3, PS4, Wii U, 360

Bought for me the Christmas after my parents bought me a launch day PS3 (60 GB).

This TV has mostly been used for the PS3. I use my PS3 just as much as my PS4 now. I had a 360 for about 6 months and finally sold it when it started collecting dust. I still own a Wii U and play it from time to time. Cant wait for Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros

PS3 was for my 16th bday and TV was for Christmas

I don't remember the brands, but this is how it went:

30"
36"
54"
70"
19" (Going to college has its downsides/downsizes)

11" 1997 Sony
24" 2001 Sony
55" 2006 Sony

Also, I use a 24" monitor as a "TV" as well since it has an HDMI port which I got around 2011. Oh and its Samsung

19" is a good size for gaming from a perfromance standpoint. I personally stick to 30-34" tvs for gaming as they offer the best combination of performance and size for everything else. I hate gaming on anything larger besides casual type games or slow paced games.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

My consoles travel around a lot lately, but this is how I remember it:

1996 - My father's old 11" Sharp tube TV (for N64, Gamecube and even Wii)
2000 - A 19" Grundig tube TV (for N64 only, lol wonder why)

Then came the modern era:

2008 - 40" Sony Bravia (for Wii, PS3, Wii U)
2014 - 22" Haier flat screen (for N64, PS2, GCN, DC)

*We actually have a hard time getting rid of the Grundig tube TV, since it's been around here for almost 30 years now and it has a certain appeal to it

Can't remember the years but,
13" (or 11", it was small)
21"
29"
40" (full HD)
27" (1440p, Samsung PLS). The quality of this monitor is so much better than everything else that I don't even use the 46" LED in the living room.

Oh God.
My very first TV was a small ass 5-8 inch TV and used it to play the original Xbox. I still have the TV working. Dunno who made it though.
Years later I got a Magnavox 25in SD TV I use to play 360 games on. I thought that thing was amazing.
4 years back my dad bought a new TV for the living, 32in Olevia TV and tasted 720p for the first time in my house. Glorious. I played my 360 and PS3 on it.
I went from that to a 1080p 22in PC monitor last week. Pretty good so far but I feel like a 24inch would have been better.

Now I play my PS2 games on the Magnavox and 360 and PS3 on the monitor. I should have bought the monitor years back.

Wow.  How close did you have to sit to play on that?  Here I thought I was normal, guess I was spoiled on televisions.
