Not flop, but I did maintain that it would do considerably worse than the Wii. I did not expect it to perform like it has though.

I'm not trying to be facetious here, but I'm honestly curious as to why people are so surprised. Was it that the Wii was doing so well, and people thought the casual audience would stick around? Or did people just have more faith in the Nintendo brand that they thought it wouldn't turn out this way?

its as you said the Wii did so well. Surely some of those people who bought it would ahve been interested in the follow up? I knew the casuauls wouldnt stick around but maybe some of those casuals became full fedged gamers. I gutess the brand itself is weaker than even I thought

The reason that didn't happen might have been because it took so long for the next gen to come around. The more successful breakout products usually iterate quickly, both to help keep things fresh and to keep funneling prices downward.

Not even if Nintendo drops an atom bomb on Sony and Microsoft's conference, it won't save the Wii U from selling poorly. Honestly, I think there is two things Nintendo could do to save the Wii U.

1. Abandon the Wii U, and make a new console, comparable to XBOXONE specs. Barely above 360 graphics aren't helping the Wii U.

2. Plead to the third parties to fill there console with ports. Hell, if Third parties didn't hate nintendo so much the Wii U would be in a much better place.

that could be true but that doesnt explain why PS4 and One did SO much better than WIi U in comparison and they were a year late to the next gen party. Shouldnt people have been clamoring for a new Wii sysyem?

I never thought the Wii U would sell like hotcakes, but abysmal flop? Never.

I actually thought the Wii U would rebound with second screen functionality. I still think it can, but it's increasingly unlikely, and would call for more un-Nintendo decisions. Nintendo needs to advertise, but they never do because they think their IP will sell itself.

It doesn't.

I've explained how I would fix the Wii U before, but I'll repeat it.

Step 1: Buy abandoned IP.

Step 2: Write a good script for it and make a new game. Keep production values LOW and style HIGH rather than fighting for photorealistic graphics.

Step 3: Release on your console. Advertise both system and game as a second console (support functions) with a lot of exclusive titles which are highly nostalgic rather than high end graphics.

Step 4: Sell BACK the IP you fixed up for more than you spent on it.

Let's face it: we all know a Nintendo-made Chrono, Legend of Dragoon, or any of a dozen other titles will sell reliably to a limited crowd because Nintendo still more or less translates to quality game (if not console). Not enough to support an AAA game budget, but an AA game? Easy money, especially if these projects were priced at $50 rather than $60. Coincidentally that will also distinguish you from your competition and give your console a reason for existing besides "Touchscreen!"

No, I didn't expect it to do Wii numbers but now I'm not even sure it'll manage 25 million total sales.

Once I saw that it appealed to me far more than the Wii I knew it was in trouble.

No. I was actually super hyped for it and bought it day one.
