Forums - Sales Discussion - May 6 Japan Software Totals

Are the numbers right? I know the PS3 didn't have anything new, but the numbers seem too awful to believe.

The PS3 has been selling less software than systems for quite a while in Japan

PS3 games aren't that big in Japan, its like a 1.3 attach rate

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Still, shouldn't even old, bad titles pull in more than 10k units? That's only .1% of the software total for the week. It's like the Japanese think the PS3 software contains a rootkit or something.

Has any new system performed this badly in terms of software so soon after launch? I mean Japanese consoles in Japan that is.

it's not like that in Japan unless they appeal to casual gamers. You can clearly see it on the DS and Wii when games have legs, but Sony games tend to sell most of their games right away, then fall off the charts. In Japan hardcore gamers usually buy their games on the first day, and sell them back when they are done with them, that's just how it is.

oh yeah, and PS3 hasn't had a release in what? 4 or 5 weeks now?

I think two things are going on. People are buying PS3's in anticipation for games that are coming out later on, and they're buying it for the Blue Ray player. On a high note another 800k+ software week for the DS. More than 80 times more DS games were sold than PS3 games. Can you imagine going to a store and seeing 80 time more DS games than PS3 games? I'm sure that not what it's like in gaming shops in Japan, but it still has to be a huge disparity.

Do you guys think that PS2 has officially passed the torch to the wii in Japan? The past few weeks Wii has been beating PS2 software pretty badly.

I think that many people are buying the PS3 now because it's the cheapest BR player in the Japanese market and not for games. probably only half of them buy it for the games now

How the mighty have fallen. sony used to own nearly half the Japanese market two years ago.  Now they are barely one-sixth

it's like saying i'm going to buy a car at 14, because i want to get ready a few years later when 'i'll get my driving licence.... seems weird since there's no shortage of PS3
