Forums - Gaming - Halo and Destiny composer Marty O'Donnell was fired from Bungie for no reason

Bungie is in WA and they usually make you sign a termination at will contract up there. They can let you go anytime they want.

Anyway, I imagine they must have some reason. It just seems crazy, because Marty has been with them for like 20 years and is part of their heart and soul. Or was, anyway.....

Then it really should be private. If it's part of the state law then the company can fire someone just like that, then what is he complaining about? He needs to take it up with them, not rant about it on twitter. Those kinds of actions don't help you in the long run.

Sad, though it may be, he needs to be a professional.

Hmm, pie.

Okay. So I can't give out too much detail here, but I will let you know what I know. Marty was a contracted employee, he didn't just get a fee for each game he produced. Marty had received a significant raise in the last few years, but was now asking for another. This created tension between him and the board (some of whom already felt he was overpaid). A verbal argument ensued recently between Marty and a member of the board. Shortly there after he was let go. So there was certainly 'cause' but one that a lot of us felt could be worked through. But money talks. The board feels they can get someone for cheaper, and without the drama, that will have a better ROI.

So basically it seems that tensions rose to a breaking point, one the board felt they couldn't work past, or didn't want to deal with, so they let Marty go. I'm not saying it was right (I don't think it was), but that is the situation.

Kind of sad because the music was one of the greatest things about the Halo franchise, even when you are not a fan of halo you know the theme song...pity..

He's probably a prima donna. It's expensive living in high class.

Hmm, maybe he should give 343i a call.

oh my god no. He should move on to a company with actual talent.

Oh gawd - another one of those people.

Always three sides to every story. in this case it would be 1. his side, 2. bungies side, and 3. the truth somewhere between the two of them.

Thanks jlmurph!

yah, for "no reason", suuuuure...

Yeah, no. You're a highly recognized name in the industry working in a 500-person studio that is in the process of creating its most ambitious title to date with expansions and sequels planned and they fire you, just you, for "no reason"? More likely that he pissed in the wrong person's cereal.

no one is fired without a reason. must of banged the ceo's wife
