Forums - Gaming - How do you feel about game prices?

Can't really complain the US is pretty much the best country when it comes to getting good deals on games both new and used and online and in stores.

Triple-A titles can and should retail at $59.99, while other less proven titles should retail at $49.99. Handheld prices are perfect at around $34.99. I don't mind game prices that much though, at least compared to DLC. Map packs for $14.99? I understand cosmetics and extra challenges and such for $4.99 max, but selling maps? C'mon.

Xbox One - PS4 - Wii U - PC

I pay full price for stuff I can't wait for but most stuff I end up paying a discount price because of the backlog I have, too much

Games are reasonably priced but they really cost too much if you want the DLC. I sure hope micro-transactions don't become common place on consoles or handhelds

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

Pay full price for any game I am hyped for or know I will play multiple times. I never buy games that I am not sure I will like until priced below $30

I don't pay more than 20 euro for any game, i buy it used if it never falls that price.

But it is because i buy more games than i play , i have 75 games on ps3 and 50 games on xbox 360.

Only game i payed full price was deception iv , cause waited 10 years for a sequel lol.

Don't have problem waiting cause I have countless games on pc too and thousands games on emulators too.

That is very misleading as it doesnt take into account how the salaries increased in relation. Besides, is that US or something? Its not representative of the whole world.

I am fairly sure that games today are hitting Sonic 3 like prices. Your pretty graphic tries to hide that but my wallet doesnt. Of course, those games were failed price experiments as sales plummeted as a result.

I guess I should have clarified. It's U.S. prices. And here's U.S. median household incomes, adjusted for inflation (graphic from Wikipedia):

Not sure what the situation is in Portugal.

Alot worse, thats for sure. Average wages on the US are alot higher than most countries.

inflation has basically raised the price of everything around us,

Not really. PCs have gone down in price, TVs as well, blu-ray players are far cheaper now than VHS players were. Nowadays I pay less for movies than 20 years ago. Laserdiscs cost me 70 guilders, about $32, that's before inflation. New blu-ray releases are $20 to $25. Music and books, cheaper or the same, mostly thanks to digital distribution and online shopping. When it comes to entertainement it's really only movie tickets that have gone up.

Games would sell better at lower price points. I know I would buy more. Now I'm content with steam sales and what ps+ throws my way. Not that I can't afford it but for a lot of games I don't feel the value is there.

Let me clarify, when I say everything, I meant most everything. I wasn't so much speaking about just electronics. When it was the late 80s, early 90s and games cost $50-60, postage stamps were a quarter, now they're fortysomething cents, milk, bread, gas, housing costs etc have all gone up, some dramatically whereas games are basically the same price. Yes, many electronics are cheaper but most everything else has seen prices gone up. As for games selling better if the prices dropped, well most likely but then the profit margins aren't there and it still wouldn't cover costs. Besides, most games drop in price eventually anyway for those who want to hold on. If I think a game will be great or the reviews say it is great, I don't mind the price and will gladly spend the money. After all, if a game doesn't sell well, I can't expect to see a sequel or games similar to it which would be disappointing. For example, if I had a Wii U, I would buy Mario Kart 8 at launch because it's a series I have loved and it's almost my way of rewarding them for making a great game.

I'll come up with something better eventually...

If a games going to last me a long time or is extremely fun then I don't have a problem. But I won't pick up pricy games that I'm pretty sure I'll just beat in a few weeks and be bored of.

Games are not worth full price considering that most of them are incomplete and have 3 or 4 pieces of DLC that come at $10 to $20 a pop to add extra weapons, levels, maps, or extend game play by 2 hours, etc. Total cost of full priced game plus all DLC can total $100+, ie $60 game + 3 to 4 DLC making the game cost between $90 to $140.

If a game has a ton of DLCs I refuse to get the game until they come out with a bundle, for example Borderlands 2.
