Forums - Gaming - Consoles: what do they cost (€) in energy a year?

So I did some number crunching, and for each day your consoles will cost you this much to play-

PS4- .12€
Xbox One- .13€
Wii U- .02€

Pay-to-play confirmed

See, the wiiu saves u money in 3 ways now! (Free online, lower price point, lower power usage)

or you can not buy a wii u and save a ton of money

Same can be said for all consoles

bad logic you can buy a ps2 instead of a wii u and save in many other ways too.

Never said you can't.... heck... ps2 has better games than wiiu, ps4 and x1 as of right now

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

My Laptop costs more power to use then all of these consoles, and I don't even plug it in all the time.

Conslusions:

  • With every new console generation, power use goes up, and thus making consoles more expensive on a yearly basis.
  • Slim versions of console will most of the time cut energy use and thus be cheaper energy wise.
  • Nintendo is very good in making sure their consoles don't need a lot of power. The Wii U only uses €7,- a year on energe, the Wii only €5,- a year and the Gamecube only €3,- a year!
  • The Playstation 4 and Xbox One also use more energy than the average refrigerator which is on 24/7!
  • While energy use in consoles goes up, energy use in other things like refrigerators goes down.

Unless you keep your refrigerator door open all the time, it will not run 24/7.  A typical duty cycle should be between 25% to 50% of the time (so 6 to 12 hours per day).

Hmm... I did some quick searches, because those numbers just didn't make sense to me.

Based on what I've found, the PS4 and XBOne use more than their slim last-gen counterparts, but much less than the original systems.

Here are some numbers that I found for wattage used when playing a game:

PS3 (60 GB launch system): 206 Watts
PS3 Slim: 96 Watts
PS4: 139 Watts

XBox 360: 187 Watts
XBox 360 Slim: 90 Watts
XBox One: 119 Watts

Still not even close to heating and cooling and toilets (water usage) cost wise. AC for a month cost more then an entire generation of playing PS3 where I live.

Edit: Also this is dutch so energy probably cost more there then here in the US.

Wow... thats quite high for the PS4 and the X1. I use it for more than 2 hours a day on average aswell. :x

Good thing i have a super slim PS3 and a slim 360.

what are they using for a price/kwh?
