Well I remember Nintendo saying all Wii U games showcased at E3 last year were running at 1080p/60fps.

I thought it was pretty obvious that was a clueless rep confusing upscaled with native resolution.

Because Nintendo have demonstrated with their recent games that they prefer to target 60fps with v-sync at 720p.

And what happened to the hype about 1080p @ 60fps ?

What hype about 1080p/60fps? I only heard that from one or two overly zealous fans.

I even remember some nintendo fans going around posting that cinemablend article while smirking PS and xbox fans at the same time ...

Obviously not!

I don't even know what to call this phenomenon I'm witnessing. Goalpost moving? Backtracking? Role reversal?

Lying?

Last year whenever anyone suggested Wii U games could run at 60 fps in native 1080p, the skeptics laughed those claims off and asked for proof, saying there was no way it was possible. Are these now the very same people pretending that 60@1080 is what was expected all along? Is a locked 60 frames per second at 720p during splitscreen multiplayer while wirelessly and laglessly streaming to another display with no frame rate compromises, no screen tearing, no pop-in, no stuttering suddenly not good enough for the gamers who put up with sub-HD at 30fps with all of the above issues for an entire generation?

Ha ha. No. There was quite a few who believed 1080p 60fps was easily doable on the Wii U. Many Nintendo fans here speculated it was achievable and that in no way the console lagged far behind the new HD twins in terms of horsepower. Where have you been? If anything, the goalpost moving is done by those who believed that.

Well ... Games could run at 1440p 60fps on the PS360 if game developers wanted to do so. It's just that developers mostly push graphics above performance. I never once believed that MK8 would be 1080p ... In fact I was expecting something along the lines of 768 x 1366 at BEST.

And what exactly is impressive about the graphics here? Textures? Lighting? AA?
If we want to distinguish art style from technical impressiveness, let's be clear about the technical details here.
I'm not seeing anything great here.
There seems tons of SCOPE for reflections from glowing objects, multi-level translucency/ advanced materials, that just don't show up.
No techniques that are implausible to see on PS360, not even remotely. Split screen is very easy when your textures, lighting, and objects are very limited.
I'm thrilled to be educated about any advanced techniques being implemented...
Otherwise, I don't see the point in pitiful delusion about technical advancements, just enjoy the game for what it is...

Who exactly are you aiming your comment towards?

"Games are a trigger for adults to again become primitive, primal, as a way of thinking and remembering. An adult is a child who has more ethics and morals, that's all. When I am a child, creating, I am not creating a game. I am in the game. The game is not for children, it is for me. It is for an adult who still has a character of a child."

Shigeru Miyamoto

Wow, we are so off topic! xD

Wait... You, someone who claims to be so knowledgeable about tech and shove the superiority of the PC every turn he can, believed that MK8 at 1080p wasn't just wild illogical speculation?

@Bold When did I ever do that ? Now your just generalizing PC gamers alltogether ... Even if that happened I would joke about it ...

Smash Bros will be 1080p at 60 fps, so it is certainly possible on Wii U. Fatslob is right: it all depends on the developers' priorities. And Nintendo has different priorities from other developers, leading to their console's power being distributed in different ways.

For instance, they have prioritized off-TV play with the Wii U. Consequently, it performs this function more adeptly than its 8th-generation rivals. Obviously, the Wii U is not as powerful as the PS4 or the XB1. So if they're so powerful, why can't they accomplish seamless 60 fps off-tv play? It's because they aren't optimized for it, and the Wii U is. It's because the Wii U's power is distributed differently.

Likewise, Mario Kart 8 prioritized splitscreen multiplayer. If Nintendo didn't care about maintaining 60 fps during splitscreen, they could have buffed up the single-player settings of the game. But they didn't want to do that. Some 7th- and 8th-generation games don't support splitscreen multiplayer at all. It's not a priority for them, so they distribute the power at their disposal differently.

720p at 60 fps isn't "impressive" for an 8th-generation console game. Is it impressive for such a game during splitscreen multiplayer? Is it impressive while streaming a 60 fps feed off-tv? That depends on the game. Is Mario Kart 8, looking as good as it does, such a game?

*shrug* I don't care. But the game looks good, and Nintendo's priorities are more aligned with my own preferences, so I have no objections.
