Forums - Sony - PS4 has always online DRM after all.

Well this is quite odd. I only ever use broadband to download PSN games and then immediately put the cable back in my PC. I play PSN games regularly without any messages coming up. What it does do though is warn my son's second account that he needs internet connection.

The PS5 Exists.

Throughout the the years, Sony has lied to its consumers about EVERYTHING, but this is just terrible.

You finally come back and it's to post the most ridiculous Sony hate again.

This was just now found out? Either he's doing something wrong or a very very high amount of PS4 users are using internet.

Its been found out since 2006. AKA since ps3 launched. Its the exact same policy

Ok so what is he doing? Is he on someone else's PS4 trying to access his digital games? Because if that's the case then this shouldn't be blown up at all.

They haven't lied about anything, this is the same policy that's been used by the PS3/360 since their launch. If you download a game it needs to be verified once before you can play it, which shouldn't be an issue since you just downloaded the damn thing :P Once it's verified you are free to play it on or offline at your leisure. Not sure how that can be considered always online DRM.

I couldbt tell you what he is doing (im not there) but thats irrelevant. The issue was the DRM being on the console itself. No matter what with the original plans of XB1 the console needed a 24h check in to be able to play anything including disc based single player games. Ps4 never had that.

The Irony? If not April Fools... Le sigh, its hard to tell which articles are legit and which are not :/

It's legit, but it's 100% like how it is on 360 and XBONE. This isn't new info guys...

Well, according to the site its different on the 360 and X1? Idk, I am a bit confused...

"Certainly on both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One others can jump on their own profiles and get playing my games stored on the consoles. I can also play the digitally downloaded games offline regardless of time period.

So there we go –

  • The Xbox has no DRM (and alas, no game sharing)
  • PS4 has no DRM on discs – but it has very strict DRM on downloaded titles"

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

I can't believe anyone is really surprised at this. It's not like they didn't put crazy DRM on stuff before.

Although, I do kinda know the people that solved one case with a black marker pen. Years of working on a fancy DRM only to have to squashed in a few days.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

"A video is circulating which displays a PS4 user irritated that his games could not be played without an internet connection. He attempts to play Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Sound Shapes, and Flower…

Each of the titles refuse to launch, instead displaying a message stating: “Cannot start the application. The PS4 is not connected to the internet and cannot verify the license for the application”

This is not the first time this has happened the social media just now caught on to this occurence. Serendiptitous that it occured on April First, becuase what theses journalists are purpoting is not the full truth!

THE TRUTH IS: during a psn maintenance, for whatever reason, the psn store is down and because of that it cannot verify licenses to user accounts. What this means is that if a game your are trying to play a game off of a user account that is not registered as home on the ps4 in use then you do not have an active license. Basically if you are game sharing on ps4 that means only the home console games registered to your hardware can be played. If you are trying to play games on someone else's account you cannot during maintenance.

BOTTOM LINE: During PSN maintenance you can only play games that are registered to the hardware via a home ps4/psn link. You cannot play games from a psn account that is not set to home on the ps4 in usage at that time.

THIS IS NOT THE SAME THING AS ALWAYS ONLINE DRM

It is very frustating for those who have their home ps4 set to a seconday console though...
