GDC 2014: Single-Player Only Games on the Rise, Says EEDAR

The number of console titles released with multiplayer is decreasing, says game industry market research firm EEDAR.

Speaking at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, EEDAR co-founder Geoffrey Zatkin revealed that in 2013 the percentage of games with no multiplayer support rose to around 46 per cent of all released retail titles. That’s the highest figure since 2009.

The generally perceived notion is that publishers are seeking to increase the longevity and market appeal of traditionally single-player franchises by tacking-on competitive multiplayer modes. However, that trend seems to be on the slide.

Meanwhile, the prevalence of co-op is on the rise. In 2013, around 38 per cent of retail console titles featured co-op play, up from 29 per cent the previous year. In 2007 that figure was just 18 per cent.

Sounds right. I thought it was a silly trend to begin with. People aren't going to care about a tacked on multi-player when other games that concentrate on multi-player are out there. Besides that, it raises development costs and adds server and support costs.

I also think the rise of co-op games like Borderlands has made people re-think the idea of adding value.

last gen I rarely bought any game that had no MP or co-op... However, this gen there are quite a few SP games I am planning on getting: inFamous SS, FFXV, KH3... already got the first one :-p

Sounds right... gamers needs more single-player games.

A fantastic game for me needs first to have a AMAZING SP and a GREAT MP.

The Last of Us GOTG.

You can also add witcher 3 in that list.

Hmmm. Peoples taste differs. To each his own.

I think this is overall good news. There's nothing wrong with multiplayer, in fact its amazing, but there were quite a few titles last gen that wasted time and resources and awful multiplayer components that no one ever played.

There's nothing wrong with branching into multiplayer as long as the quality is high and there's a legitimate reason to do so. For me the two games that really got it right in terms of branching out were Mass Effect 3 and The Last of Us. Both modes felt naturally part of the experience.

Good I generally prefer singleplayer games. Increase in co-op is good too, I just wish they had more local co-op games.

I work in gaming retail and I can tell you right now this is a huge missed opportunity in the industry right now.  You couldn't be more right.  There is a huge group of consumers without access to great internet or more multiple consoles who want to co-op.  I litteraly see couples every day who want to play together but have very few options.

I'm confident local co-op was one of the main reasons Gears of War got so big.  The industry really needs to add more of these types of games.

That's bad, I want both.
