Believe me when I say that you can never read too deeply into Zelda timelines and story. There is alwasys something in between the lines.

If you actually research onto that subject. It is a direct sequel as far as Hyrule is concerned. The three games in between took place either in Labrynna Holodrum, or the Isle of the Wind fish.
