Nintendo used to be, but they certainly are not anymore. Their new Wii U console has not mde a dent in the console market.

PlayStation and Xbox are interchangeable
. But for the sake of having a complete answer, I say PlayStation because it is the more popular brand.

That's why I chose Nintendo, as I think the gaming world would be a lesser place without them in it.

I like Sony, and prefer the PS4 to the WiiU for sure, but honestly if Sony and Microsoft closed their doors today, next year we'd have Amazon and Apple or Samsung and Google with consoles approximately doing the same things as Sony/MS, with the same exact kinds of games (hello Madden, COD, etc).

I agree, but if we're looking for the most "essential" console. Nintendo hasn't been the most essential console since the SNES. If Sony and Microsoft both decided to stop making their consoles, the industry would collapse. If Nintendo decided to stop making consoles -- it would have minimal impact.

I wouldn't say minimal, but I mostly agree with what you are essentially saying...

Nintendo. But I hope all of them survive.

I choose Sony because I grew out of saving princess Peach in Mario along time ago.

Too bad for you, I feel sorry for you random "serious" "grown-up" person... you should try growing out of sleeping as well, because when you sleep, you dream you know...

I don't need your pity.

CPU: Ryzen 9950X3D
GPU: MSI 4090 SUPRIM X 24G
Motherboard: MSI MEG X670E GODLIKE
RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR PLATINUM 32GB DDR5
SSD: Kingston FURY Renegade 4TB
Gaming Console: PLAYSTATION 5 PRO

LOL @Poll

FACT: Microsoft is more important than Nintendo in console gaming, currently.

Nintendo introduces gamer as children, Sony keeps them gaming through adult hood, and MS makes it mainstream in the US. With only one by itself would fail, when it was only Nintendo gaming wasn't taken seriously at all.

I was actually happy when gaming wasn't taken seriously/trying to be hollywood so hard.

Thats actually for a different but related reason. If not for Sony and later MS, Console gaming would practically be dead. And PC gaming would be nowhere near as fruitful as it is now.

There's no way of no this for sure. I doubt console gaming would've died. We would just have different companies involved. We could speculate that console gaming might have been better if Sony and MS weren't involved, or speculate the complete opposite. I imagine though that things would largely be same to today's reality.

fair, speculation is speculation. I can only assume from the starting point of this which would be 5th gen, that the companies themseleves are debatably replacable, but the roles that they filled are not, in that gaming would have to be made "mainstream" and "online".

Sony.

Without PS4 this industry would die. WiiU's, or NIntendos disappearance wouldnt be really relt. 3rd parties dont make their money on Ninty systems.

lol, with Sony(&MS)  this industry is dying, high budget games are killing companies after companies, concentrating all the ressources in the hands of a few big publishers who are allergic to inovation & risk taking as albinos are allergic to sun... I get that the masses of formated sheep like their generic shooter & teens like their dull gory violent game to make them feel more adult & manly (instead of courting girls outside in the real world), but as seen the console market is shrinking faster than George Costanza intimate bits after a swim, I think the way of AAA high budget Hollywood wannabe type of games is heading in the wall really fast.

Sony makes the most innoative games though so your argument is invalid. No other company wants to experiment with new ideas like Sony. That is the reason why Rime is a PS4 exclusive, because MS didnt want it on their system. And Nintendo? They keep on relying NIntendo but in the last few years they relied on the plumber more than usual (cant find the list how many Mario games they released). Its because they want securred sales, and Mario gave them that, but now they realize they cant survive on Mario alone.

You're not gonna see Journey, Flower, Gravity Rush, Sound Shapes, Tearaway Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Rime, Heavy Rain and many more from Nintendo. A very diverse list of exclusives, not just 1 franchise.

Nintendo. Besides all the history and how important Nintendo was in the 1980's and the 1990's I think Nintendo is the company which most people connect with videogames. Just think about Mario and Pokémon. Because of these franchises the home console market increases and you could replace Microsoft and Sony with other companys producing great experiences and trying to do everything better what Nintendo does (Yes, I am referring to motion controls and 2nd screen/touchpad features). I don't want to miss Nintendo. and I don't want to miss the others but Nintendo is the most essential. Maybe that changes some day because of the development these days but maybe they will be even more essential.

I don't hate Microsoft, I don't hate PC,
I don't prefer Sony, I don't prefer Nintendo.
...Ok, I love Nintendo but this is something about tolerance, ok?

I'm a gamer with one of the greatest hobbies and I want to share this greatness with everyone.

Sony First, MS Second. Nintendo would work well with either platform, best on both.

This is console, not handheld. That would be a little different.

Depends on who understands how to balance 1st party/3rd party greatness, making technology accessible to users and developers, and set a good price point. A few missteps aside, Sony generally does the best job of all that. Nintendo did that with the NES and that's what 'saved' console gaming.

MS does all that okay, but sometimes has some obstructive business policies. We've seen flashes of brilliance from Nintendo, but seldom any consistency.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Nintendo should be accredited for creating a simple system that is still in place today. Without the clinkity clankity silicon work that was the Nintendo Entertainment System... videogames would never have been so good. Not only at what they were but as an evolutionary process. We as a gaming community owe Nintendo, but lately...
