Like full lets plays

I think youtube should encourage content creators to make previews and reviews and special features and use better editing equipment instead of uploading them playing and commentating over a game.

I say this because its unfair to devs - especially story only devs and games with a primarily story based games. For example, im no less guilty, I was going to buy beyond 2 souls but decided against it because of the reviews and instead watched the whole thing on youtube.

A story I liked and probably would've paid for.

For open world and online only games like minecraft, dayz etc. Lets plays are a god send and potentially increase sales. Whereas for games like beyond they are completely the opposite.

It results in games with half assed single player modes like titanfall because no budget was allocated for the section that people end up watching on youtube.

The comparison to uploading movies is always made but I think it is unfair. Video game makers work just as hard as movie makers and there story shouldn't be available free to everyone in its entirity unless they for some reason choose to do so.

To go one step futher i think similar piracy laws should apply to story based games than there are on movies and tv shows.

But people will still upload?

Yes but hopefully it encourages people to create videos which are more engaging and well crafted, and therefore ad revenue is more / better earned. Youtube is a competetive place for video game people. Mainly because some people subscribe and watch EVERYTHING and some people subscribe to the few, the popular, such as peeeeewwwwdddddiiiiiieeeeepiiiiiieeee. (pewdiepie) Hopefully they showcase sections of the game and things they like about the game, maybe discussions with gameplay more, instead of record -> colour correct -> upload.

And if they are not earning ad revenue on full lets plays, it should decrease the number of lets plays (and i'm purely talking about single player only games or games that are primarily single player with arguably tacked on multiplayer) so content enough to encourage someone to buy the game increases making it a win-win.

This is my opinion, whats yours???

Around the Network

It doesn't really bother me whether a tuber monetises by adverts as I block them. I get so frustrated at video ads on the occassions I have to use Youtube on someone elses device.
Ultimately I guess yes it is unfair to upload whole games with cutscenes and make money off it.

As to stopping the videos entirely. No, definately not, people should be allowed to upload what they want.

I disagree cause many commentators/lets players live on youtube just by doing that and many of them are entertaining (except PewDiePie who I think deserves 0 ad rev) and I would hate to see them go cause them getting "real jobs" or working more frequently = less videos from them for me to enjoy

With that being said, I do agree that its not fair to developers so what the publishers/developers should do is take an even or small percentage of the ad revenue so that its a win win

If someone is willing to watch an entire game rather than play it themselves, they probably wouldn't have bought it anyway. I'd say LP's actually increase a games sales more than they damage it, even for games in which the story is a major focus.

The first episode of PDP's let's play of TLOU has 9 million views and maintains several million per episode after that, yet all those views hasn't stopped TLOU from selling 6+ million copies in less than a year (putting it ahead of every entry in the Uncharted series, which is quite the accomplishment.) Can't say his videos are my cup of tea, but it gets the point across.

It depends on the let's play. It depends on the level of editing. If it's like Chuggaaconroy then, it should be fine. I think Let's player should follow the LP rule ( which is basically wait 3 months after release) and should be generally informative over off topic commentary.

Disagree, I have bought games after watching parts on YT.  I bought a Wii U + SM3DW after watching playthrough of most levels.

Watching a game all the way through and then saying you would have paid for that but now you won't is just weird.

True but I think those who live on youtube should earn there youtube money in the same way workers earn there money, working hard. And hard work is something like angry joe show does, he edits almost all his videos and keep his "non edited ones" short and entertaining.

And you're right about pewdiepie, uploads full gameplays which he earns masses of money because millions of people watch, who then do not buy the game as a result and he essentially earns money off failed games.
But him and many others

I agree, dont stop LP entirely, but stop ad revenue on entire LP's so the youtubers who do it for the money are less inclined to essentially be lazy.

Not really my point though, focusing on story based games, Mario world is platforming fun on the other hand so for most isn't fun to watch in its entirety vs watching sections to get you hyped to buy.
