Like full lets plays
I think youtube should encourage content creators to make previews and reviews and special features and use better editing equipment instead of uploading them playing and commentating over a game.
I say this because its unfair to devs - especially story only devs and games with a primarily story based games. For example, im no less guilty, I was going to buy beyond 2 souls but decided against it because of the reviews and instead watched the whole thing on youtube.
A story I liked and probably would've paid for.
For open world and online only games like minecraft, dayz etc. Lets plays are a god send and potentially increase sales. Whereas for games like beyond they are completely the opposite.
It results in games with half assed single player modes like titanfall because no budget was allocated for the section that people end up watching on youtube.
The comparison to uploading movies is always made but I think it is unfair. Video game makers work just as hard as movie makers and there story shouldn't be available free to everyone in its entirity unless they for some reason choose to do so.
To go one step futher i think similar piracy laws should apply to story based games than there are on movies and tv shows.
But people will still upload?
Yes but hopefully it encourages people to create videos which are more engaging and well crafted, and therefore ad revenue is more / better earned. Youtube is a competetive place for video game people. Mainly because some people subscribe and watch EVERYTHING and some people subscribe to the few, the popular, such as peeeeewwwwdddddiiiiiieeeeepiiiiiieeee. (pewdiepie) Hopefully they showcase sections of the game and things they like about the game, maybe discussions with gameplay more, instead of record -> colour correct -> upload.
And if they are not earning ad revenue on full lets plays, it should decrease the number of lets plays (and i'm purely talking about single player only games or games that are primarily single player with arguably tacked on multiplayer) so content enough to encourage someone to buy the game increases making it a win-win.
