Really, it's controversial to think that the R&D and production costs of this would hurt Sony if this thing doesn't sell?

It's 'built upon pre-existing tech...' Yeah, so was the Viao line and their TVs. You can see from all the features pulled into be in this that they are doing a lot of R&D. Hope it doesn't blow up in their face.

I think it's kind of crap how Occulus Rift, made by a small company, is doing all the preliminary, hard work and investment and then when they prove consumer interest, big established companies are swooping in with fat sacks of cash and trying to beat them to market.

Sony has been working on this for a MINIMUM of 4 years.

Yeah, I love how people think this concept was just thought of yesterday.

Stop R&D, all of it, nothing will ever sell!

There will be no new successful technologies, right?

They have to make an investment somewhere.

VR could very well be the next big thing, why not jump on it?

I meant in Sony's case particularly since they need all their new ventures to be successful going forward. Someone argued there were no real costs because it's based on existing technologies. That's pretty naive.

Is there any live feed or blog scheduled for today?

And Occulus Rift was never going to come to consoles anyway.

It sure costs a helluva lot less than the CELL processor R&D did!

I think it's cheaper than you imagine. They had most of the bases covered going into this thing, and they are a tech company that's always been investigating new stuff so...

To assume that every single venture any company takes, can be construed as a hit/miss in the R/D phase is pretty naive also.

WTF. I'm not talking about any company, and I'm not talking about evaluating success in the R&D phase. I'm talking about the teetering-on-the-edge of bankruptcy Sony and saying I hope that this is a success or the loss of the money spent developing and producing it might cripple them entirely.

It's naive to assume any company can predict what will be a hit, during the exploratory phase of R/D, that's all I'm saying.

It sure is. Be sure to mention that to anyone who says anything remotely like that in the future.

It'd be naive to assume a dog can write a top 20 radio hit. I am not going to be around later, so bring that up to anybody who says anything to that effect for me while I'm gone,  if you have a chance. Thanks!
