I could be late, but it seems like the size of the character roster is known.

According this trailer (1:36) Mario Kart Wii has 24 characters. I could be wrong, but you can hear the speaker say "charakter" (or something like that) and they're showing some drivers.

Someone can translate this video, or what's said at that scene. It looks right.... I guess....

Read about the game in Official Nintendo Magazine. It got a great score; 94%. Also does anyone else get the impression that Nintendo are trying to give Princess Peach a sexy image, she wears a leather bikers outfit in this game, hotpants and a crop top in Mario Strikers, and in numerous Golf, Basketball, etc, shorts. I rest my case.
