http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/19/top-ten-things-to-do-with-your-now-defunct-hd-dvd-player/

The article states as follows:

"Finally, HD DVD users now have the empirical evidence they've been looking for to prove that the universe really is conspiring against them. We figured we'd make ourselves useful over here and give you a list of things you can do with your poor, obsolete HD DVD player -- starting with taking it out to dinner, excusing yourself to the bathroom before the check comes... then getting the hell out of there.

Gimmes

  • eBay
  • Doorstop
  • Entertainment center cup-holder
  • Destroy it. Office Space style.
Oh, the humanity
  1. Mail it to the office of Howard Stringer in protest of Blu-ray's victory.
  2. Plug it into your clothes dryer's 240-volt outlet. Woops, honey! My bad, guess we have to buy a Blu-ray player now.
  3. Finally, replace your Betamax player.
  4. Buy the Blu-ray player of your choice, put it in the box, attempt to return it as "defective."
  5. Channel it through Whoopi Goldberg and make some pottery with it.
  6. Put a Blu-ray disc in the tray and then call up Toshiba when it doesn't work. Repeatedly.
  7. Put it in a time capsule, just to confuse future generations.
  8. Buy a few dozen of 'em and build a little hut for your Blu-ray player.
  9. Lock it alone in a room with a few lethal weapons... let it die honorably.
  10. Use it to upscale DVDs, which is all you ever used it for anyways.
Of course, feel free to leave your own suggestions in comments."

I thought 6 and Office Space destruction were funny ideas.

Yeah a lot of those are funny but if Stringer gets thousands of HD DVD players on his doorstep or someone burns down their house from trying to plug it into a Dryer outlet, then they might be in trouble.

Stringer can build something out of them. Or maybe send them back to Toshiba with a big FU on it.

You should add - fire up the HD DVD player, order a few pizzas and watch some HD DVDs and DVDs. I know folks who still have Laserdiscs, 45s and 33s - shoot, I have quite a few 33s.

Anyone that wants to dump their HD DVDs, holla. I'll gladly take them off your hands. Don't send the players to that dude - ship them to me!

Considering how easily the shoe could have been on the other foot, I'd say this list is a little harsh towards HD-DVD owners.

What this list sounds like to me is "HAHAHAH WE WON WE WON NEENER NEENER SHOVE IT HAHAHAH"

By life end:

  • Wii- 100 million+
  • Xbox360- 35~40 million
  • PS3- 30 million
  • PSP- 30~32 million ------------- FAILURE
  • NDS- 85~90 million (Skeptical)  - FAILURE
  • NDS- 100 million+ (Optimistic) -- Success!

Yea it a joke and i can't tell if you get it or not but i assume you do.  I'm not disputing that you could watch the movies you have but if you want to watch new movies in HD you need a Blu-ray player.

Engadget doesn't play favours (unless it's Apple, they've been accused of every so often), if it is Blu-Ray, they would have made the same joke.

and nah it doesn't sound like "HAHAHA WE WON" , it sounds more like "HAHAHA, LET'S MAKE FUN OF THE LOSER"

people will probably be using them for DVD players since that is at least a format that won't die.
