GTA IV, the highest rated game of last gen, had am embargo like 1.5 days before release. I am thinking Rockstar was petrified that no one would like their game, was probably completely surprised that it got amazing scores and went on to sell millions. And they didn't even put out a beta to universal acclaim.

Who knows? It wouldn't have been weird if they were nervous. After all they had invested more than a 100 million dollars in the game.

From the interviews I've heard from Vince Zampella, they are trying to keep as much under wraps as possible. He acknowledged the leaks on gaf/reddit but puts it down to fan excitement.

I'd expect another round of leaks once people begin data mining the PC pre-load files.

And they knew it would sell millions and millions and they'd make their money back hand over fist.
