Forums - Microsoft - Ever Wonder if People Can Spy on You from the Kinect? Maybe.....

Yes, the Kinnect can be used to spy, I have no idea if it is though. I do know that it makes enough people uncomfortable that privacy covers are being sold on Amazon.com. The NSA is becoming super creepy and I wouldn't put anything past them.

....and there we have it. If they wanted to do this they would and could... and they would go after webcams first as it is far easier and far more open to attack and control. Kinect would be a tad more difficult to say the least.

But this is serious. Quick, close your laptops and never open them again. Better yet, don't leave the house, never use your phone and certainly don't send an email.

Build a bunker, move into it and be very, very quiet.

Or just buy a ps4 :D

and not bundle in that web camera thingy... good idea (for other reasons though)

But you will still have an internet connection, laptop, mobile phone, email account, postal address, job and a body to walk around in.  All of which can be monitored, surveiled and checked on a minute by minute basis at will.  Kinect is merely another in the vast and enless list of ways you could be monitored.  Not having Kinect doesnt make you invisible you know.   "I dont want those bastards monitoring me.... I wont buy Kinect" is so ridiculous in the context of our lives and how we can be "followed".

No... Kinect is small fry in the grand scheme of things, assuming any of this actually bother you.

haha true.

But yeah, no, I agree with you. If you have a webcam, I'm not sure why you're concerned with privacy in the first place...there are cameras everywhere now. It sucks, but well....that's the new world for you, and it's not going to change. Just embrace it for the good things it can allow. We'll deal with the rights violations when appropriate.

People have been using cameras for spying for ages. How would this one be different?

Why does it suck? What on earth are people doing with their lives that they're so afraid to have caught on camera? I will never understand it.

I don't wonder if, I know they can. Just turn it off if you don't want anyone looking, stop being surprised technology works both ways.

If they spy on me they will see a nerdy brazilian man playing video games. So, who cares?

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

So there's a good and a bad side to this: Owning a webcam/Kinect alone probably isn't a problem. If, however, you're using any kind of online video chat like Skype - then you're in big trouble, as they've probably taken periodic snapshots of you, too.

really?  why?

I've highlighted the rest of the sentence in case it didn't show up. I hope that helps.

It sucks because it's like going out with friends. If I go out, I like to make sure I look good, smell nice, etc. I will only take pictures if I'm aware of how I look, or am having a lot of fun. I don't even like my friends to post pics of me on facebook without approval. I want to present myself well. It is important to me that my personality and expression shines through in pictures. I hate having pictures of me taken candidly.

Despite the fact that I will never see pictures of me that are taken by the government, I don't like the idea that I can't be comfortable when I want to be comfortable.

You know how it goes. When you go out, you put on your best, stand up straight, put on the charms, etc and when you're at home you let it all hang out. You don't care about eating half a pizza because nobody is going to see you or your post pizza belly. Sometimes when I go out, I don't want to feel like I have to 'perform', but I'm inevitably drawn into it. It's just part of who I am. I care about my public perception.

As the article says, about 7.3% of all still images they captured contained "undesirable nudity" (=naked dicks), they were even surprised themselves just huch much compromising images they collected that way.

Not everyone likes to show his most private body parts to potentially ten thousands of anonymous intelligence service assholes.

Fair enough, and I relate to that a lot. Still though, out of sight out of mind. As long as pictures of me don't start leaking somewhere I don't mind.
