Actually, Pears > Apples. Literally - pears are denser, and thus sink in water, while apples float. That's why you never go "bobbing for pears". And therefore, being more substantive, pears must be greater than apples.

Nobody wants all of that extra stuff packed into pears.  It inflates the price.

Have you ever eaten a ripe pear?  If the pear is not ripe yet, then maybe I can see your point.  But a ripe pear is soo much more juicy and soft than an apple that even ignoring the difference in taste, one should be able to tell the difference.  A ripe pear willl just practically melt in your mouth, you can pretty much eat it without teeth.  An apple is crunchy.
