Forums - Nintendo - 'Wii U Is A Clumsy, Awkward Device'

Godus developer Peter Molyneux says that his game could come to PS Vita or Steam Box but that PS4, Xbox One and the 'clumsy' Wii U may not work.

Published on Feb 26, 2014

Peter Molynuex's latest project, Godus, could come to PS Vita and the Steam Box, but is less likely to make its way to PS4, Xbox One and Wii U.

Asked about the possibility of Godus on other platforms aside from PC and touch devices by Develop, Molyneux said, "I think the Vita is a possibility."

"I think the Wii U, if you tweak that very clumsy device, is a possibility but I find Wii U very awkward. I think the Steam Box with the touch-sensitive controller is interesting."

Molyneux also explained that bringing Godus to PS4 and Xbox One would be difficult, due to the central importance of touch controls to Godus.

"Godus is multi-platform. I can have Godus on phone, tablet or laptop – they’re all portals into your world. If I sculpt on one, you’ll see it come out on the other – it’s a truly connected multi-platform title."

"We could include the consoles in that," Molynuex continued, "and we would if not for one major obstruction: Godus is all about touching your world, stroking your world."

"We get away with that with the mouse, even though it’s not as nice, but it’s very hard to do for console."

Molyneux also talked about the continuing growth of free-to-play, criticising the way that an aggressive approach is turning players off the model.

"There is a lot of contention happening in free-to-play right now," said Molyneux.

"I hate the term, and I hate the way free-to-play is burning through our consumers and the tender shoots of new gamers. I think the world is ready for a new way to approach that whole angle."

Molyneux explained that it's preferable to build a game where monetisation is not your immediate thought and that if you build a game that people enjoy playing, they are more likely to want to invest.

I had to bring you to your senses. It's Molyneux we're talking about after all :D

I actually think WiiU would possibly be the best device for it since you can use your tv and still use touch controls. Godus does look interesting but im going to disagree with him on this

EDIT: Then again you have to look back and forth on wiiu so it may not work well.  Depends, id have to try it before saying

stroking your world lol. Loves how he says steam box has touch sensitive controls and is a possibility but ignores the ds4 touch pad. Not sure how the pad isnt similar

Godus on Vita could be interesting.

Molyneux is full of it. How can a game designed with touch as it's main focus not be feasible on the Wii U or 3ds for that matter. The lights are on, but nobody's home. It doesn't sound very connected to me.

"Games are a trigger for adults to again become primitive, primal, as a way of thinking and remembering. An adult is a child who has more ethics and morals, that's all. When I am a child, creating, I am not creating a game. I am in the game. The game is not for children, it is for me. It is for an adult who still has a character of a child."

Shigeru Miyamoto

What a load of BS. A man should rise to any challenge, not run away crying and complaining about it.
All he does it moan like a total bitch.

I'd say his comment is most likely linked to microtransactions limitations. 3DS and Wii U are certainly clumsy in that department.

Molyneux is an overrated, clumsy developer.
