Forums - General Discussion - Official: HD-DVD dead and buried, format war is over.

At least according to Engadget who quotes Toshiba reps:

http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/19/official-hd-dvd-dead-and-buried-format-war-is-over/

It's official. Toshiba just made a statements saying, " it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders." Cessation of the player and recorders are targeted for March 2008. Volume production of HD DVD disks for PC applications and games will end in the same time frame.

Is this the moment everyone has been waiting for?  It really looks like it might be this time.  What do you guys think.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Well, it was about time! It's good for the business as a whole.

Lost my faith in VGChartz. Too many stupid and ignorant Americans, even as moderators.

It's a shame, really. "The Boss" should do something radical about this Americanization, but it seems hardly feasible, so my days here are numbered.

Abut darn time...

so anyone predicting a Ps3 boost in the next few days

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Finally, a win for sony in the media division! After failing with Betamax, Minidisk and what not, one win for them. It can only mean good

I can't wait to finally watch Transformers, Shrek the Third, Boure, American Gangster, and all of the other great Uni/Paraworks titles. This will do wonders for Indiana Jones, the PQ in that movie is just going to be sick. I think the news is going to spread very quick, as it seems people are very aware of the HD formats after Sony's PS3 ads this winter, and Toshiba's winter and Super Bowl ads. Many people at work today were asking if it was true about Wal-mart and it seems those with HD sets will migrate farliy quickly.

The real question now though is what will happen with PS3? I feel it is going to go wild. with a price tag 100s of dollars cheaper than most BR players on the market today it should sell very well over the next few months. Then with the launch of GTA4 many will pick it over the 360 even at a hundred dollars more that is an incredable deal. But I think summer will be huge for PS3. Profile 2.0 players will be launching in June for several hundred dollars more than the PS3, and this can only boost the momentum for PS3 once it becomes more common knowledge that it is 2.0. The they have MGS4 at the same time. If you stil don't think 2008 is the year of the PS3 you must know sothing I don't.

Thank God, I wonder how soon we will be seeing those HD-DVD only films on BluRay?
Into the wild is being released in march on HD-DVD, I wonder if the studios can get their shit together fast enough to release it on blu-ray instead.

̶3̶R̶D̶   2ND! Place has never been so sweet.

What im waiting for is Transformers, thats one movie i was extremely angry at being only on HD DVD, we will see how long it will take to migrate to BLU-RAY...also, the PS3 does have firmware updates right? This means that it will eventually be a 2.0 player?

Yes PS3 will be 2.0 compliant. In fact Sony was diminstrating 2.0 on PS3 at CES, when they showed Blu-ray to PSP.
