Illumiroom if cheap enough, could be a game changer. Easy way to cheapen it up, is to make The projection system a add on to Kinect. This way people could slide it together and the only piece they would be paying for is the projection. I think this would be genius.

Or just get rid of the kinect completely and bundle illumiroom . We don't need kinect, there is a controller and media remote now. :D

they need kinect to use Illumiroom. So it is worthless with out it.

But Kinect V2 is not designed for that. It'd work of course but you'd need cable extenders, mounts, etc. Illumniroom with cheap Kinect V1 tech would make more sense in my opinion. Adding it to the projector wouldn't be too expensive.

I think location is a bigger issue than price. Lots of people don't have coffee tables and most wouldn't want a device stuck there. People also aren't going to want a permanent overhead mount. One solution would be sticking it on the player's controller. That'd also be a good way to hide the price. $60 standard controllers and then $150 illumiroom controllers. They could just put it where the Kinect trackers are.

Illumiroom is not going to happen.

A $300 projector is not going to cut it. You need quite a powerful lamp to project onto irregular walls and objects while competing with tv light output.
A short throw lens for coffee table use is not cheap, placing it behind you on a shelf is not practical for most.
It probably needs some wireless video transmission as well as having a cable running though the living room is not practical, yet you're still stuck with a power cable to the coffee table.
The XBox One doesn't have the power to render a second screen for the projector.

Anyway they said themselves it's not for consumers.

You want to stick a 3000 lumen projector into a controller??? And it's more likely they used a 5000 for 6000 lumen projector for the demo.

Give it a few years. Right now we can stick low quality dim projectors on anything we want, so is it that crazy to think in 2017 we'll be able to stick low quality less dim projectors on a controller? To me the biggest problem is battery life, but if you're ok stringing a cord to the coffee table you'd be ok stringing one to your lap.

How about this. Do you have a better idea lol? I know Microsoft has said it's just research right now, but if you were FORCED to bring it to market in 3 years, how would you do it? Putting the projector and Kinect V1 in the controller is the best I've got.

Yep that's pretty crazy for 3 years.

Those low quality pico projectors are in the 12 to 50 lumen range. 100 times brighter in 3 years is quite a stretch, plus physics are a pain for scaling that up large enough to provide a bright enough border around a 40" to 65" TV. The extra light output requires a lot of room and bigger lenses to project over a big area from a short distance, it simply doesn't fit.

Maybe some laser pen technology with magnetically controlled mirrors can eventually be minituarized enough to use to draw shapes on the walls. Ofcourse that would never be approved as it can damage your eyes. It is interesting tech though: http://blog.elamperti.com/2013/11/drawing-with-a-laser/

I don't believe they ever intended it for consumer use. It was a good PR project that might have some uses in commercial/business settings.

Considering how bad this year financial results are I supose Kaz will get a massive pay cut next quarter.

If the poster was true, "Beta Tested in the Future." then microsoft would have known to remove the Kinect from the xbox one. Just sayin.

$300 for an illuminroom projector never going to happen. The lamp for a projector alone can cost up to $300. For what illuminroom wants to do you will need a very powerful lamp. if Microsoft do decide to release a $300 projector i think they will take a big lost for every device sold.

The thread title is so sensationalise. I got excited about something really interested only read about an update that is about as exciting as the one for my watch.
