The average consumer isn't checking historical console sales data. They are going to see that the PS4 is outselling it's two main rivals by a large margin. Out of the current crop of consoles the PS4 is possibly the only one that doesn't need to worry about it's image.

Actually it does need to worry about it's image ... Just because your at the top spot doesn't mean your out of the rat race just yet ...

All system doing bad =/= PS4 doing amazing

But the PS4 isn't doing bad, It had a better first January than the 360 or PS3 and is on track to beat them both in February.

First January

X360: 518,227

PS3: 380,096

PS4: 696,505

XOne: 301,214

February

X360: 330,928

PS3: 240,586

PS4: 282,793 (as of 2/15)

XOne: 101,702 (as of 2/15)

Can we stop with the baseless doom and gloom now?

Did it have a better first january than WII ?

Nope and it was never going to. So using your logic a console is either the fastest selling console of all time or selling badly? No middle ground?

Not saying there's no middle ground but it's doing less impressive numbers than the more impressive number than we had thought.

Did the PS1 and PS2 have a better first January than the Wii?

No but that was back then when Sony had no following with the PS1 and there were supply issues with the PS2 while both were riding on GOOD macroeconomic trends but this time it's hard to sell a $400 console in this day and age.

You said that the numbers were "bad news for Sony" and they just aren't. Who's numbers are comparing the real numbers to? Who thought the PS4 was going to have a better January and February than the Wii? It sounds more like someone just preditced wrong than this being an issue for Sony.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Console.... industry..... dying.....
This model does not work, wake up people!!

Lol, industry dying because it goes back to PS2 era ?

You seem to be obsessed with the PS2 era.

With this gen prices, something like the PS2 era will destroy the videogame industry. Or do you seriously believe that third parties can survive with only one succesfull console?

one console with a large active userbase would be better than 3 consoles with a small active userbase each.  ports, unnessisary code branches, and the increased QA time associated with that will be eliminated once wiiU and xbone support are completely dropped increasing profitability by lowering development costs.  so as long as ps4's active user base > ps3 + 360 + wii's active userbase things will be coming up roses for third parties.

3DS is ridiculously overtracked again. It only sold 97k last month in the US, how is it selling 49k this week alone?

I guess ioi didn't hear about those "leaks"... Lol

He did. Otherwise he wouldn't have adjusted 3DS down. He just doesn't want to adjust exactly to what NPD says, for some reason.

And guess which manufacturer will contribute the most to the coming market contraction?

At least you seem to have faced the facts, which is good news I guess. I agree that the traditional model is going out of fashion, in several senses of the word.

The same manufacturer wich expanded it to insane levels.

So they can be attributed to unsustainable growth that only they made money out of, is that a good thing for the industry as a whole? That just shows a lack of foresight. They helped create a bubble and ironically ended up doing more or less the opposite of what some said they would do ("save" the industry) and that's not something to brag about.

Besides; Sony expaned the home console market a lot more with their PS1 and PS2, yet you would likely never give much credit for that. If anything, they're the ones who created a home console biotope that was actually viable since 1995 (but no longer is to the same extent).

Are you some kind of mind reader? (bold)

I know exactly what Sony, Sega, Microsoft and Nintendo have done to this Industry, the good and the bad things.
What´s important, is that one of those bad things is happening now, thanks to Microsoft and Sony, and that is elevating the costs to unafordable levels. I don´t care anymore what happened in 1995, and im tired of talking about how Nintendo saved the industry back in 1986; we are not anymore in those times. We are living now, in 2014, and the industry is fading away.

Which makes the PS4 numbers even more impressive. It's not a cheap console even though it's not the most expensive.

When did I say that the numbers are bad news for Sony ? These numbers are half decent and it's falling out of our expectations.

Yeah, I was being sarcastic.... How close did he get to the leaked numbers?

This.

It is easier and cheaper to make a game for one console than for three. With one dominant console you also have less price fighting which drives down profits and less fighting over exclusive content and ad deals. Two consoles that are fighting close will run each other into the ground and the winner will be whoever is willing to dump the most money into the project. It's bad for the industry and bad for gamers.
