I always think the classification as western and japanese RPGs as very weak. The differences are imperceptible, if you look really at it. You will find japanese and western RPGs for nearly every style. So I'm not really sure this classification makes any sense. That starts with the early JRPGs (like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy), that were heavily influenced in gameplay choices by the preexisting RPG-classics like Wizardry and Ultima.

  • Origins - JRPG's from the dawn of video gaming through the end of the 3rd generation. Includes the NES.

*cough, cough*
As JRPGs are very late to the party (around a decade) they weren't existing in the dawn of video-gaming.

I decided to do the "JRPG" in particular rather than RPG's in general for a few reasons. First, I thought it would make my life a bit easier by cutting down the different games that get voted for. Second, I'm interested in both the "JRPG" and "WRPG," and will do a vote on the latter if this one is sucessful. Third, I wanted to avoid the whole "RPG's from this chunk of the world are better because of xyz" debate that would likely occur if we allowed Final Fantasy 7 to clash with Skyrim and whatnot.

And I'm aware that JRPG's as a genre are a bit young. It's just that the way I wrote the rules didn't discount RPG's made in Japan before Dragon Quest and other JRPG standard bearers. I'm pretty sure that RPG's were made in Japan in the early 80's, for example, even if they were clones of Western games.

I'm reconsidering making a bunch of smaller threads for each category. Does anybody see the problem with all the voting taking place in this thread?

I've begun the long tallying process! Basically, I'll keep adding points as people keep voting.

Please vote. I love these Most-Wanted-style things.

Just picking one for category:

Origins - Final Fantasy III
Evolution - Final Fantasy IV
Prominence - Chrono Cross
Maturation - Kingdom Hearts II
Modern - Persona 4 Golden

Story - Xenogears
Design - Xenoblade Chronicles
Gameplay - Kingdom Hearts II
Presentation - Kingdom Hearts II
Influence - Final Fantasy VII
Multiplayer - None

Based on the First four categories, the Top 10 Games of the moment are:

  • Chrono Trigger
  • Final Fantasy 1
  • Final Fantasy 3
  • Final Fantasy 4
  • Final Fantasy 6
  • Final Fantasy 7
  • Final Fantasy 9
  • Final Fantasy 10
  • The Magic of Scheherazade
  • Wild Arms 3

Surprisingly little love for Pokemon so far! Especially considering how Gen 1 alone is more popular than a lot of series.

Keep the votes coming, and I'll keep counting them!
