The Kinect 1 was a big success and sold lots of 360's.

I dont think Wii U Pad or Kinect are bad ideas on there own, there just bad ideas when combined with price bloating the console and no killer software to justify them.

I definitely think that almost ends the thread.  I am just curious as to how Nintendo with the Wii U, Sony with Move, or MS with Kinect haven't managed to produce a single killer app for their peripherals between them.

How do peripherals exist without Killer apps in mind?  What spawns the idea for a peripheral if not software that would use it well?

I honestly think the peripheral argument is a red herring. The inherent problem lies that the kinect and the gamepad raise the price of the console to where it becomes less competitive, for a marginal benefit in "innovation" when they aren't really changing the industry at all.

Sony's Backwards compatibility was drove up the price of the PS3 and it was arguably more integral to the console as it increased the library substantially.

Yeah i agree this is what im saying, im not having an argument about them being peripherals they just are.

But Microsoft is saying "KINECT IS Xbox One".  They made it so there's no discussion on whether it's packaged with the One or not.  They've rebuffed on EVERYTHING but that.  They've made their decision, in my opinion.  They left it up to the consumer, after all the backlash 6+ months before it was launched.  And, in essence, because of them STILL bundling the KINECT at the end of the day, they said "Deal With It".  Well, people are, in their own way...

Gimping the hardware of both to be able to squeeze in such expensive controllers was a huge mistake also.

Sony got it right with the PS4 ... people just wanted a straight forward next-gen console with good power at a decent price.

Nintendo and MS are the ones who made things more complicated than they had to be.

The camera is selling great or at least its hard to find, but it would not of been worth forcing it on everyone and adding $50 to the price of the console.

Sure. I think the PS4 cam supports your op. The playroom and streaming are its killer software.

Yes. Yes. Yes. So much Yes in this OP. You seriously nailed it. My thoughts, almost every average Joe gamer out there thinks this way. A lot of these comments are spot on as well. The average gamer wants to play the best possible version of their favorite game. It happens to be on a console that is $100 bucks cheaper which is a BIG deal, so far people say the better controller, higher resolution, FPS, less pop up, clipping... it is all just a little smoother on the PS4... so people are not even hesitating to jump ship from the 360 to a PS4 this gen. We are gamers. We want the best version of our games. and its cheaper?! It's so simple. We don't want a $100 camera that has no killer apps or any real reason to want it at all. It adds $100 to the price which makes most people who do buy the console hate it even more. Just thinking to ourselves "stupid camera that I'm rarely gonna use costing me an extra $100 bucks..." i mean that's almost 2 games... so yea I think they failed big time. Nintendo I think can still redeem themselves. I am still intrigued by the Wii U and I kinda want one more and more as the days pass by. I think I'm very cliche and with the crowd when I say that this gen for me will be PS4, Wii U, PC.

But but but Kinect isn't a peripheral.

That is flawed though. It actually didn't sell many 360's at all outside of the USA. And clearly the fact that something is a one hit wonder merely reinforces the point that peripherals are not a good long term bet. Even Wiimote ended up failing. How can I say that you ask? Reverse back to 2008/9 Wii was selling faster than PS2 at the same time in its lifecycle. People were talking 200 million sales. The Source was even predicting Wii would reach PS2's LTD. Forward to 2011 Wii sales started bottoming out even before Wii U launched. The Wiimote ended up being one of the most successful fads in gaming, but it was a one hit wonder in the end. And it failed to secure Nintendo a solid  consumer base for multiple generations.
