On that subject, I would like a retro super metroid, as that is one of my all time favorite games.

How long have Sony fans been waiting to bust that out, lol. Brings up a good point though, how long did the PS3 get dragged along until it was "saved"? It wasn't software, from GTA to Gran Turismo, that finally made it sell decent. It was a slim model, rebranding, and price cut.

The PS3 never sold this badly.
Soundwave said: The only good thing now is when Bayonetta 2 and X eventually come out and bomb, at least they have the "hey even Donkey Kong, Pikmin 3, Wii Fit, W101, bombed and even Mario is having a tough time" excuse so there's no expectation on these games to have to perform on this lame duck console. That might be the saving grace for getting a third Bayonetta or Xeno game greenlit because Nintendo can't possibly blame the developers when everything on the system is underperforming in the way that they cut ties with Silicon Knights and Factor 5 once their games sales declined. |
I have a feeling that X and bayo will do quite good, they are different types of games compared to the bombs.

I think you raise quite an interesting point by bringing up FPS'. Namely, that we have seen the genre begin to be saturated and while the big guns (CoD/Battlefield/Halo) keep chugging along, you get stuff on the outside like Medal of Honor/007 Legends/Homefront/Rage/Resistance etc. etc. which can't keep up. Some of those were quality issues; but some of those were absolutely fine games which just didn't sell.
Undoubtedly, the market is bigger for FPS' than platformers but maybe DK is now being pushed more to the outside while people prioritize ever-present Mario and - apparently - Kirby. Though, the strong sales of the 3DS remake would suggest otherwise.
So that leads me to the conclusion that it's just first week jitters alongside toxic console.
The problem with the low sales of this is the thing it's on. It's not that platformers are over saturated, it's not that Retro made the wrong decision, it's not that DK is unpopular in Japan.
The Wii U, a badly selling console with really bad and little marketing/advertising, is the problem. It doesn't help that Japan has also been more keen on buying Handhelds compared to Home Consoles in the past few years.
And I don't know about you guys, but I didn't expect this to help the situation all that much. It would've been more helpful had their been more games released along side it, but there aren't. How well did they even market this?
AgentZorn said: This game could have sold way more if Nintendo tried to push the game. So far the only game I have seen them give a damn about was 3D World, and even that advertising push was rather soft. I think the Wii U is beyond saving now. Nintendo attitude towards the console is whats hurting it the most and I believe they will drop software support for the console in 2017, or even earlier than that. Nintendo seems to think that all they need to do is release something, tell no one about it and it will sell millions. |
While i generally think advertising has gone haywire in scope and cost in the industry last few years Nintendo feels too far on the other end of the spectrum.
Unfourtanetly in todays climate and advertisment/hype static one needs to break through that static. Otherwise not many except the most initiated will notice you.
I see more people buying the Wii U lately. This past week I had a few friends on FaceBook, DeviantArt, and real life purchased a Wii U and more people are planning to.

I think it has to do more with the first than the second part. DKC Returns sold well on Wii, but didn't move consoles Or not as many as some expect for a 6m seller franchise. I guess it was smoke and mirrors. |
Could be that.
It`s hard to know if DKCR moved Wii consoles because it was released during the holidays. But the 3DS version made 3DS increase 21% when it came out in Japan.
pokoko said: The problem with Donkey Kong is that it's a platformer on a system that already has a number of high-profile platformers. The people who would buy Donkey Kong probably already bought the system for Mario. It's the wrong genre for a hardware bump. Even Bayonetta 2 will probably bring more new customers to the table. Mario Kart and Smash Bros. are the only real hope remaining in terms of major system sellers this year. |
For Japan, at least, Hyrule Warriors will probably do decently in that regard.
Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
