Forums - General Discussion - Toshiba's press confress to end it

I agree. People seem to say Wal-mart made the last move, but I think it was pretty obvious to everyone that it was over before hand, Wal-mart just confirmed it by following public demand.

I still think it's a low ball move by Toshiba to cut loss, I mean, over a million HD-DVD owners now face a completely obsolete machine.

Even Sony kept on selling Beta machine until late 2002.

I believe that was only in Japan. Beta did much better there than it did in NA or Europe, but still lost

It's not Toshiba's fault that movie studios didn't accept the format though...Toshiba might still produce the players...we don't know they're going to totally cut off all production.

I think anybody who jumped into Blu-Ray and especially HD-DVD so early excluding PS3 owners was stupid...it wasn't a guaranteed win until a few months ago when the movie studios shifted toward Blu-Ray the most. Those people paid more for discs and players than they needed to, just because it's the newest tech. It's their fault for thinking HD-DVD and Blu-Ray could co-exist forever.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

we knew it was the end when Warner Bros joined the blu side

no, it ended when Walmart jumped to the blu side

It was over before Wal-mart made their move. Warner was the turning point in the war. Once Warner made their announcement, Toshiba had to pull out a miracle in order to stop their inevitable demise. All they could manage was another price drop (which didn't impress anyone based on the lack of sales) and they wasted some money on a super bowl ad (that didn't show in most areas, and half the areas it did show it was in SD!!)

Nah, it was over when the PS3 launched. HD DVD never recovered.

no, i'm not disputing that Beta lost, but for Toshiba to ditch it completely would be giving its own supporters the middle finger. You don't screw your own supports.

I hope Toshiba still produces burners and give support to those who own HD-DVD.

Really what can they do. Sure they can keep making discs but whats the point. The only way I can see them supporting their fans is by having movie companies make like 100 000 or so copies of their lastest movies and selling them through an official site.

Anyway HD-DVD will come back sooner or later. Nintendo is always looking for reliable media with little to no royalties.

I hope so, then I can finally watch Transformers on blu ray.

Yes it should finally be over, does anyone expect PS3 sales to boost in the next couple of weeks?

 I guess a small one...

Finally consumers can buy Blue Ray player and don't feel sad anymore that a movie is exclusive for the other side...

I wonder what Sony would choose:

Win the HD war or win the Console war?
