What do you want?

Jaw dropping graphics at 720p / 900p 49 25.00%

Slightly better graphics at 1080p 78 39.80%

Laughs at console peasants 24 12.24%

Titanfall will save us 10 5.10%

Its obamas fault 19 9.69%

But but mario kart 8 16 8.16%

Total:196

Not happening. Last gen was 720p, and this gen is 1080p. There will be stupid exceptions from 3rd parties running below that of course, but they won't be common.

Resolution over effects over frame rate please.

720p does look blurry to me. Heck, anytime something doesn't run at the native resolution of my display it bothers me (ie anything other than 1080p).

What some people don't get is that unless you use 1080p, you cannot see the extra detail. Example:

-Metro 2033 in 900p: The difference between Medium and Ultra is minimal
-Metro 2033 in 1080p: The difference between Medium and Ultra is Massive.

So enjoy your medium detail in 720p, because that is what Ultra will look like. There just aren't enough pixels...

I prefer 1080p with jaw dropping graphics over 720p/900p with slightly improved graphics.

1080p does not look slightly better, it looks much better. I'd rather sacrifice anything but texture detail in order to keep the resolution at 1080p. You can lower shadows, light effects, object detail or even FPS in order to get 1080p running.

I also played Perfect Dark in highres mode on N64 by the way and in my opinion it did run perfectly fine and looked so much better. When having to decide between 720p and 1080p with slightly lower FPS, effect details and shadows, I'd always chose the 1080p option bacause 1080p is the TV standard and upscaled graphics look ugly and blurry.

Upscaling quality always depends on the algorythm used, therefore 720p only looks better than 900p on a 4k TV, if the 4k TV has a bad scaler. The 900p picture still contains a lot more information and detail which can be used by a good scaler to create a superior 4k image compared to 720p upscaling.

The problem with that is that for 900p it will be a 2 step process. 900p -> 1080p, 1.2x each pixel, then to 4K which is simply doubling each pixel and line with some smoothing algorithm on top. 720p to 4K can go in 1 step, trippling each pixel and line with better smoothing results without artifacs introduced by the console upscaler. There is more information in 900p which will help a little bit with sub pixel detail (power lines and such) but 2 stages of blurring is not great.

It would be fine if the console could upscale to 4K or output in 900p and let the tv do the whole process. Going trough a 1080p intermediary sucks, the damage has already been done.

I don't ever let resolution stop me from purchasing a good game. I do love eye candy and sometimes ugly games can cloud my first impression, but for the most part I let the gameplay do the talking. If it's fun to play I don't mind what the game looks like at all.

I'd rather have better graphics at 720p 30fps. Since it requires twice as much power to render 1080p than 720p, that means that maybe they could have twice as better graphics at 720p.

it would be better to use the extra power for other things. the only problem with this is AA and blurriness which can make it pointless.

Before you guys start bashing me please read what I wrote. Its a known fact taht ps4 is the most powerful console out there. And has good raw power to make games look and feel awesome. But there are two facts.

1. PS4 is the most powerful console.

2. Its still a console and power connot exceed given horsepower (1.84 tflop).

Now we are seeing many games are running 720p and 900p in competitors systems and general gaming people dont give a damn. We tech savvy people or gaming media cares. Most of the games have similar textures but resolution and framerate different.

Now what if (in 2016/2017 this might be true) many games especially first party sony studios start making PS4 games at 720p / 900p with jaw dropping graphics? They use the advantage of resolution for jaw dropping graphics. The resolution might be lower but those awesome graphics will impress everyone.

What do you guys think? Will you accept jaw dropping graphics (compared to competitors games graphics) with the same exact resolution (700p / 900p)? Or do you guys want a little better graphics at double resolution (1080p)?

That's the whole point which everyone is missing. There WILL be 720p games. That is a guarantee from me to you. The difference is that the ps4 version will be allocating the usual 720 -> 1080p difference to boost graphics, physics, on screen elements, ai etc. That's why this discussion was never about framerate or resolution to begin with.

The discussion was about how ps4 was already showing significant difference in both resolution and framerate. People take the small visual discrepancy (thanks to diminishing returns) and think that's all the power it has....some slightly imperceptible difference. That's only because of diminishing returns. When that extra power is used for something else, it's going to really show. Big time.

Until something as clean and smooth like this is achieved in gaming
graphics can still improve. That's why I dont understand statements like "graphics has reached a point where it cannot improve"
