They won't. Those are franchises that were on N64 and GC so even if they became bigger this gen, Wii u will do most likely 30 millions at the end.

Once the 3ds got SM3DL and Mario kart 7, the system started to do well.
Once the WiiU gets kart and smash, it will do well.
What's the link? quality games. The WiiU/3ds lacked those at first.

It will help the Wii U a lot, that's certain. Save? Two or three titles won't cut it out, that was made clear after super mario 3d world. However, Nintendo has a nasty habit of pulling something out of their ass - so i won't write off the WIi U just yet.
I am hoping is that the Wii U sells decently enough so Nintendo won't be completely overshadowed by Sony and Microsoft.

not gonna happen

More or less this.
The other is the key of local multiplayer. 3DS is eating away at the people's need to buy a Nintendo box, because the 3DS games are becoming so similar to the home games, but local multiplayer is still where home consoles reign supreme.

If we remove the Wii as something that caught lightning in a bottle for a few years with the craze of motion gaming/mini-game compilations, Nintendo's console performance has a fairly steady performance
NES - 65 million
SNES - 49 million
N64 - 33 million
GameCube 22 million
Wii U - On pace for under 15 million*
*based on where it's sales are at after 16 months on the market vs. the GCN/N64. Granted I think it will finish a bit higher than this, but not by much (20 million perhaps?).
Really is this much of surprise when looked at in a historical context?
The audience for people who want a console aimed more towards the tastes of a family/kids audience largely supported by Nintendo and not much in the way of good third party support has fairly predictable results for the last 15+ years and the trend has not been a favorable one.
The only way the Wii U was going to break this trend was if it broke through to non-gamers/fringe gamers like the original Wii did, but the tablet pad hasn't excited consumers in any where close to the same way and the appeal of Wii Sports/Fit has faded after several years, sequels, and me-too knock offs.
They dont need to save WiiU because not lack of games is the main problem its people dont know what Wiiu is.
I mean when i have to explain to a mainstreamer that WiiU is not an accessory for Wii it is a seperate console then everything is lost because 95% of gamers are actually not gamers but mainstreamers.
Nintendo can be happy if WiiU sells 40m but unless they dont fix the confusion 40m wont happen.

This is like asking 'how will Halo or Titanfall make people buy Xbox One?', or 'how are Infamous and Uncharted 4 going to make people get a PS4?' They're system sellers, they're games a lot of people want and are willing to buy a system for. MK and Smash Bros. are definitely system sellers, just look at MK7 for the most recent example of this. Trying to deny that is trolling, honestly.
Those games aren't going to magically make Wii U into a Wii and make it sell 100 million units, but they'll definitely move a ton of systems, without a doubt. That goes for all system sellers across all consoles for that matter; not just MK and SB for Nintendo.
