In some ways Gamecube, in other ways Xbox. This may be the one generation in history where it's a draw.

halo made me aww in a great way, I went out and bought one the next day. and gamecube well it wasnt aww in a good way.
first gen xbox all the way.
Overall the Xbox had the (slight) edge (textures/effects/a lot of unified memory) visible in most multiplats games like splinter cell notably.
But Gamecube was a monster in pure polygons processed with the 2 Rogue Squadron games and it's 15-20 millions polygon/sec displayed. I think not even one Wii game were prettier than the Rogue Squadron games.
But the split memory architecture of the Gamecube with main ram/Vram was already a problem for developers. But Gamecube memory was very fast, it just hadn't enough of it (24 main ram, 3 MB for Vram I think). Even 24MB for main ram was not enough when PS2 had 32MB and XBox 64MB.
So I would say Xbox but only barely.
People say Xbox had more power, Gamecube had more efficiency, but in terms of performance, Gamecube was the better, more capable machine. The power difference wasn't enough to make up for the Gamecube's efficiency, and as a result the Gamecube just ran games better. Gamecube all the way.

Agreed, 100%.
On paper Xbox. GC though was a well built system. It functioned very efficiently. I still think Xbox overall could do more. The Xbox version of Black I don't think could be done on GC without compromises. The PS2 version had loads of compromises. Then games like Halo 2, Forza Motorsport and Conker really stole the power for me. Also I cant forget RS2 on the GC was beautiful, as was Res 1- 4.
Overall, I'd say Gamecube. Xbox was the texture and online king and Gamecube was the polygon and load time king. Based on power, I'd call it a tie. But have you ever opened any of these consoles up to look at their sexy insides? The Xbox is a total mess inside. You can tell how little effort was put into hardware R&D. The Gamecube was beautiful inside. The intricate insides peel apart like an onion. Clearly some kind of otherworldly force was brought in to help design it. The Gamecube is, hands down, the best designed console ever, in my opinion.
raw power - Xbox
Gamecube was really efficient with the best exclusives (until Halo 2). And anyway PS2 was their bitch
I remember Star Fox Adventures.......that game was gorgeous for its time. Gotta say it is closer then many think.
Dig up some old thread, they pop once every 6 months or so, I think..last time there was lot of pics too...
Anyhow...Riddick on Xbox...
