Forums - Gaming - Don't you think reviews and hype corrupts our own opinion?

I think so. I think a lot of games are hyped up by consumers because they receive high scores by the press. Other games get low scores and are automatically labeled as trash by the consumers.  High scores can mean it's a good game, as low scores can mean it's a poor game, but people should also atleast do a bit of research and see if maybe the reviewer just wasn't interested in the title, or if the review they were reading "by some chance" doesn't inflate the score all to hell.

The scoring system has also been inflated to ridiculous levels by the journalists. Anything lower than a 7/10 is unplayable to most people, so when I review without a massive amount of inflation, the same people come in every time and cry about it despite repeatedly hearing my explanation that 5.5/10 is average in my opinion. The way it should be. 99.9% of the game library isn't going to be 7/10+. That leaves four games to be between 1-6..

That's interesting and reflects exactly what I am talking about in the OP. Even reviewers are also affected by the hype, it's like they only say what people wants to hear. Some games and series get so hyped that as flawed as they are the imperfections will be overlooked and will score more than 9/10 or 4/5 almost everywhere (Not going to give any examples, we all know at least one game like this), giving the impression the game is near perfection on it's genre and the truth is: It's not.

I really enjoyed Metroid: Other M :P

I really didn't think Bioshock Infinite as good as the story and the visuals were was even close to deserving being GOTY.
All right, confessions time everyone!

I totally agree. People seem to think that because some reviews are average the game has to be average. Because the trend now is to downplay whatever isn't 1080p people act like games "must" be bad to the point of being unplayable.

Reviews and hype have very little effect on me. I can hop on YouTube check out the game for myself and make up my own mind. The games that get mixed review get my attention the most. These are the ones that surprise you :)

I've been gaming long enough to know what I enjoy, so the effect of hype and reviews on me are minimal. They use to influence me a lot more when I was younger and just finding out about games and gaming. There is no denying that hype and reviews do drive sales. Why do you think publishers try their best to create hype and get good reviews? Sometimes they do it in some shady ways too.
