Reviews and hype have very little effect on me. I can hop on YouTube check out the game for myself and make up my own mind. The games that get mixed review get my attention the most. These are the ones that surprise you :)
I've been gaming long enough to know what I enjoy, so the effect of hype and reviews on me are minimal. They use to influence me a lot more when I was younger and just finding out about games and gaming. There is no denying that hype and reviews do drive sales. Why do you think publishers try their best to create hype and get good reviews? Sometimes they do it in some shady ways too.
