I do not think Nintendo was referring to game creation companies.
Nintendo was speaking directly about their core competencies and where they lack capability. They do NOT lack capability in creating original and quality gaming content. Their titles routinely sell very well over time and price points.
However, Nintendo is lacking in a lot of areas that they will require to expand upon in relation to their new company direction and intention.
Nintendo has spoken about quality of life, health care, networking, streaming content, mobile sphere, etc. All of this requires capabilities they do not currently have.
Let's just take networking. GC/GBA gen had no networking capabilities. Nintendo at that point has virtually zero experience with mass market level networking and online gaming. Unlike MSony who have multiple divisions that have worked with this type of technology for decades.
With Wii/DS this proved to be true as their first attempt at such a network was largely dismal. It was clearly lacking in major details and multiple titles proved that it wasn't really ready for the type of scale and functionality expected from a modern gaming network.
With 3DS/WiiU those issues have been largely solved. However, Nintendo still lacks overall capacity and robustness that is clearly present on PC/PS4/Xbone such as cross game chat/video/game streaming/etc. Basically, Nintendo is still a generation behind in terms of networking capability.
This is where acquisitions come in. Nintendo needs this expertise and every company has two choices. They can build it up on their own, which is what Nintendo has been doing. This approach is nice, but it takes a lot longer. OR they can buy a company that already does it well and integrate it a lot faster. This is what companies like Google do very well.
This is what I believe Nintendo is talking about in terms of acquisitions and mergers. They intend to buy the technology competencies they are lacking in. Had they done this in terms of networking before Wii launched, we likely would never had issues with friend codes, lack of a unified account system, etc.
Very interested to see what direction this takes.
