i always find eveonline articles funny where they say: "big fight causes huge shiploss worth several thousand dollars." just because you can convert real into virtual money does not mean you do that vice versa. maybe there are a few who would pay thousands of dollars for a titan but i'm certain the majority of eve players won't, let alone the rest of the world.

sure, thing but do they pay with real money for it? i mean does the titan builder get thousands of dollars for it or are they paid in isk which is basically playing time? i think it's mostly the latter. my point is that you can't convert the dedication some people have towards a game into real currency. for ex. if i would pay let's say 1000 dollars for a game, does that mean it's worth 1000 dollars?

Space game fans have payed Chris Roberts's Cloud Imperium Games over 40 million USD through kickstarter. The people who payed the most will get the nicest ships and gear when the game, Star Citizen, finally launches.
Never underestimate the lengths these guys will go to get ahead in empire building MMO's. A friend of mine sold his Eve accounts and assets on Ebay for 6 digit numbers not too long ago. He then spent some of these money on Star Citizen since he wants to have an edge over everyone else, and strongly believes this game will be the next big thing in space MMO's.
