Forums - Microsoft - Competitive Xbox One digital pricing is "on the agenda", says Major Nelson

Good news, peasants! Microsoft is aware that some of you ungrateful sods think £35.19 is too much to pay for a new edition of Angry Birds. Posting very briefly on Reddit, PR man Larry Hryb also hinted at announcements to come this year.

"We are way aware of this and many of the concerns of the community," he wrote with regard to a thread about a Microsoft Store pre-order deal for Titanfall, which some people are having trouble taking advantage of. "We have some great stuff planned for Xbox One this year (and beyond.) As soon as we can share some of the goodness...we will."

Asked by a fan whether the said "great stuff" might encompass more competitive pricing for digital downloads, the Major replied: "Is is indeed on the agenda." So now you know.

Digital Xbox One game prices (and, in fairness, digital PS4 game prices) are the object of much grumbling. It's been claimed that the growth of digital distribution on consoles will bring about a general price drop, as publishers pass on what they've saved by cutting high street retailers out of the loop. Alas, this hasn't yet come to pass - Xbox One exclusive prices actually rose over Christmas.

Good.

Man I would love for this to come true very soon! There are some great deals from time to time, but I would love to see day one discounts for digital copies!

I will permaban myself if the game releases in 2014.

in reference to KH3 release date

I knew it would come eventually that's why I only bought peggle 2 so far.... well that and because I have an ever increasing backlog on the 360 with all those discount and a few gfg... I'm close to 25 games yet to play or complete..... titanfall might be my first day one purchase to get in the MP craze :D

Particularly thanks the outrage that caused MS to reverse the leaked plans for XBO's digital policies, the reality of lower digital game pricing is farther away than any of us would like. It's basically the same problem that digital comics and digital movies have run into: it's not cheaper than retail because they don't want to upset their retail partners. The savings for them are TREMENDOUS and they could cut the price significantly and still make more than they're making at retail now but it won't happen as long as retail remains as powerful as it is now.

It's frustrating for those of us that are tired of having to make space for all of this STUFF in our homes and welcome digital with open arms and grasping hands, but the holdouts are too vocal so we wait while progress is impeded ...

If they start to have sales like the 360 has been having the last year or so I'll be very happy.

I hope they more of an attempt to sell digital games through retail - like a digital card that they can still sell at the retail shop.  But I seriously wonder how long retail can hang on as a business model for games. As there is no advantage to having a physical copy - other than the little booket and things like that.

Gamestop in the USA is working on changing and selling used tablets and other stuff.  Perhapse that is how they will survive.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

Honestly relevance of retail is shrinking for vg and fast.... Brick and mortar relevance for tech is dwarfing.... The only one that really go to stores are 3 categories of people.... The mom and pops over 40... The noobs that are tech illiterate... And the hypster geeks just to check the devices like you check a car at a showroom.... And those 3 groups go 90% of the time at apple store....

In all fairness, Apple has been at the forefront of digital distribution for music and lately games, movies and TV too.  Unfortunately that hasn't affected pricing much for any of those products with the exception of ... games.  How about that?

Off Topic:  I just went and looked up pricing for John Carter on iTunes, Xbox Video and Amazon.  The SD video was $14.99, $15.99 and $14.99 respectively.  HD video was $19.99, n/a and $19.99 respectively.  The Blu Ray/DVD combo on Amazon?  $12.60.  And they wonder why people pirate ...
