Carnivore Studio reached out to us today to announce its upcoming isometric stealth and horror game, Kodoku, which is heading to PS4 and PS Vita in Q1 2015. The game has you playing as a Collector, who takes on a bet to retrieve a rare book from Kodoku, which is said to be an abandoned island around Japan.
As it turns out, while this island may not contain much in the way of biological life, there’s plenty of paranormal activity floating around. So, as you explore the island, you’ll try to discover the origin of paranormal phenomena, which involves gathering documents to trace it, as well as finding other proof that exists to show to others you didn’t just make it up.
Looking at the teaser trailer and screenshots, these ghosts, which are inspired by Japanese folklore and legend, aren’t very friendly. You can see some of the game’s anime-drawn body horror and gruesome creatures in the teaser below. Interestingly, it seems that the people you make the bet against, these Yakuza-looking folk, re-appear on the island in twisted reincarnations. Just look at that guy with his scorpion body and sunglasses – a fetching summer look, I’m sure.
Being a stealth game, you’ll be wanting to avoid the horrors that lurk upon the island as you try to scour out the book you came for. We’re told there will be no weapons to use, or at least no traditional weapons. The gameplay is based around “stealth, sorcery and strategy,” you see. The stealth is based on lighting and sounds, meaning you’ll have to keep out of sight and be as quiet as possible, of course. But you can also play around with both lighting and sound to distract enemies, apparently, which will help you move them around to positions that allow you to hopefully slip by.
To help you spot enemies and figure out how to get by, one ability you’ll have is focusing your senses, a little like you can in The Last of Us, then. You’ll just press a button, and your enhanced hearing will pick out faint noises in the environment for you. Somehow, you can also “concentrate” your sight as well.
As said, Kodoku also has sorcery, which can be accessed by finding spells as you venture across the island. To create these spells, there’s a basic crafting system, and the different concoctions you can come up with give you different effects, leading into some puzzle-solving.
That’s all we know about Kodoku at the moment. As mentioned, it will be coming to PS4 and PS Vita in Q1 2015, and I’m sure there will be plenty more updates before then.
2015? Don't they have anymore VITA games to announce for 2014?
