Forums - Sony - Sony Japan President: PS4's Success in the West is Motivating Japanese Developers Too

I would love for the PS4 to reinvigorate the home console industry in Japan, but it's going to be difficult with so many Japanese devs focusing on handhelds. Luckily they'll have MGSV, FFXV, KH3 and (hopefully) DQXI. We'll see how it does.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

I guess that is good to hear. Not sure if this is how all Japanese developers feel. A resurgence in Japanese video gaming is what this industry needs.

Would love to see Japan focus shift back to consoles, but I think they will continue to move to handheld and...mobile in the short term as far lower costs involved.

This is good news, but the only thing that will motivate Japanese developers is Japanese consumers buying the PS4. That's where the problem was last time. Nothing compelled them to buy Wii/PS3/360, and the Japanese development community responded accordingly, further perpetuating the cycle.

Edit: And buying PS4 games, of course, but I'd assume that they'd want to buy games if they had the console.

Yukuza Restoration will be the first big test, if it somehow can push above PS3 sales and be sustained througout the PS4 early life, then that should be the green light the devs need.  It will be the biggest, most known launch game for a Japanese console, surprised Sega is going through with it.  Previous launch games...

So would I. I think those that claim the home console industry in Japan is dead are a bit premature. I believe it can be reversed.

This was also said in America with the doomed Atari in the '80s until Nintendo reinvigorated the industry.

It needs reinvigorating in Japan as you correctly said. The PS4 can do that with fresh ideas for that market. It's now up to the Japanese devs.

Like you I hope it happens.

No doubt Foxconn are disassembling their wii u production lines as we speak to make more capacity for ps4 production.

The ps4 is the right product. Its stylish and compact and I think will do well in Japan. It's performance level, well beyond wii u will be able to create games not previously possible on home consoles.

It's looking extremely positive for ps4 and I think there will be momentum away from xbox one as the ps4's greater power and more varied game selection is understood.

I honestly think ps4 will take this generation's crown.

No Ridge Racer, no sales

Good to hear. Now lets get great games made.

It's going to be great when it releases in Japan, to be honest I'm interested in how the Xbox One does, the 360 was very poor.
