World of Warcraft designer Greg Street joins Riot Games

Former World of Warcraft lead systems designer Greg "Ghostcrawler" Street has joined Riot Games, the company behind League of Legends. His new position is lead game designer, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Street quit Blizzard in November following five years as one of the most prominent public-facing figures on the World of Warcraft development team. As lead systems designer, he and his team were responsible for building and changing the fundamentals of the way World of Warcraft plays, including classes, game mechanics, items, trade skills and user interface.

Prior to his tenure at Blizzard, Street worked for just under a decade at Ensemble Studios, serving as a designer on numerous Age of Empires titles and as lead designer on Age of Empires 3.

According to his Facebook page, Street started at Riot in December. Polygon has contacted Riot Games for comment.

I don't know if League of Legends is balanced at the moment, but getting Ghostcrawler in is one sure way to make sure that it won't be for long!

It's balanced, but stagnant because every character does everything: damage, utility and mobility.

The game needs to be less balanced, not more.

That said I've only heard bad things about this guy.

I have never heard of this guy but we'll see how this plays out. Hopefully it turns out for the better.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

He totally nerfed Paladins to the ground. Literally. Transformed a fun class into a slow and boring one.

But then again... he ended up doing that to all classes. Ramp ups for everyone!

League needs across the board nerfs like that. They do everything too well right now. Characters need weaknesses.

Problem is that, in the way that you're describing it, LoL now is what WoW became under Ghostcrawler's reign.

Classes were unique to begin with.  Each had different buffs they could bring which led to various DPS discrepancies as classes with more buffs provided less damage.  Abilities were unique.  Classes were unique and each had something they specialised in.  Even races were unique - I remember when priests all had a special ability based on race.

And then over time, the game just because homogenised.  Everyone provided the same buffs and did similar DPS.  Shaman's totems could be replicated by other classes.  Warlocks weren't the only class which focused on damage-over-time spells.  Priest got racial abilities stripped from them.

And that's not even talking about PvP, where his solution to everything (for a long, long time) was to buff his favourite classes (*coughrestodruid*) and nerf everyone else.  I'll never forget S5 when a Death Knight could solo 3 players on an opposing team even if his team-mates had died.  Or S8 when you had to do everything from behind cover because if you didn't you'd be killed by opposing casters in a global cooldown.

By the time I'd left the game (end of Cataclysm) it seemed like him & his team had ruined pretty much everything which made WoW unique when I'd first started.  I don't follow LoL closely so maybe it needs some fresh blood and he certainly has the experience for it, but I think he did a pretty shitty job at WoW and he wouldn't have been my first choice.
