If 1080p is already that obsolete, then what is to be said about sub 1080p "next gen" games?

4K just seems pointless for anything other than big-screen TVs. I see them maybe becoming the standard for anything 50" and above once the prices get low enough to be affordable to the mass market, but for small screens the difference would be negligible from normal viewing distances. Diminishing returns and all that jazz.

4k for VR is still far from ideal so its actually quite useful if we get very small screens with extremly high resolutions. The FOV in VR could be increased dramatically without seeing the black spaces between the pixels. For example a 4k on a 5.6 inch screen would make a FOV of 100+ degrees decent looking.

You are comparing apples with oranges. It is obviously beneficial for screens that are centimeters away from the viewer; but TVs are normally meters away, only 55+ would start to see benefits.

? I am not comparing apples with oranges I am not comparing anything why are you bringing TVs into the discussion. I just said that 4k phone displays do indeed have a reason to exist and are not pointless like so many seem to believe. Which is why I am glad that the armsrace when it come to resolution and phones is not over yet the 1440p Phone displays are just around the corner. BTW I am apparently one of the few that can see the difference in image quality between 1080p and 720p displays quite easily even at a distance.
