Forums - Nintendo - 3rd parties do not want to play nice? Time for Nintendo to make them hate them even more! Leverage the 3DS against them

Bad idea considering mobile.

Yeah, threaten 3rd parties like shit... that seems to have worked on N64 and GC right??

It's more probable they stop supporting 3DS than to start to support WiiU with this kind of situation... And surely Sony would embrace them and give a lot of shelf space for them on PS4 and PSVita.

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

You're forgetting that one of the reasons PSVita is mostly irrelevant is because Monster Hunter switched. If all the companies switched to Vita, you thing Ninty can keep 3DS afloat by themselves? If so, why hasn't that naturally worked for Wii U?

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

That would be awesome... for Vita's prospects in Japan.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Way too risky. That could backfire horribly.

Why don't they threaten Japanese companies with the 3DS? The system is doing great there, make it hard on these companies in Japan. There are so many games over there and they do so well that 3rd parties would gladly start making Wii U games over there is Nintendo threatened them with the 3DS.

Businesses act like assholes all the time, why shouldn't Nintendo?

Agree?

So stoop down to their level of childish behavior / mimic negative practices to make themselves better? Only the young and the asinine would try and do such a thing. How did that work out for Capcom, Bioware, and YesGnome (Star Trek Trexels) with riding the dlc train straight down?

Nintendo has decades (hell, CENTURIES if we take into account their founding as a company in general) of knowledge to know that purely fighting fire with fire won't get them anywhere.

Doing this type of business is what drove third-parties to Sega and Sony in the 1990s (of course one could argue that what Nintendo did back in the 1980s was necessary considering the crap eco-system and practices Atari promoted which was partially responsible for the industry crashing, but the situation is far different now); if Nintendo did something like what you suggest today, then I am pretty sure that anti-trust regulators will attack them just like they did with Microsoft and IE, Apple and the App Store and iBooks Store (and I am pretty sure that Nintendo HQ does not want more bad press to deal with).

There is a saying that you catch more bees with honey rather than vinegar. So if Nintendo wants better third-party support it would be better for them to actually sit down with third-party developers and talk about their problems (they are doing this with indies and the results have been great compared to their previous strategy with WiiWare, though granted these guys want less than big publishing companies; with bigger companies Nintendo needs to spend some money which is something they are doing in Japan but not in America or Europe).

I personally believe that Nintendo should invest some of the cash that they have to create more Western studios that focus on IPs that fill in the void, this is great for the industry because we have more competition and hence everyone thinks more creatively, and Nintendo has more games to offer on its platform. Also, the reason why I said they should open Western studios is because they lack Western IPs, but also because Nintendo recently opened a new Japanese studio in Kyoto and has also acquired Monolithsoft.

As for large third-parties, Nintendo should work with them to put titles on their console that makes sense for the third-party. For example, a game like Assassins Creed and Splinter Cell do not appear to have great sales potential on Nintendo consoles, so Nintendo should work with Ubisoft to find other IPs that have better sales potential such as the Rayman series and Just Dance. In the case of EA, annual releases of EA sports games are not likely to do well on the system, so Nintendo should work with EA to provide one or two particular sports games for the console's life as opposed to an annual release and instead provide DLCs that have things like team and Jersey updates (this sort of like what EA does not anyways with Nintendo consoles anyways).

Besides making more games, Nintendo should just throw money to big games for home consoles like they did with handheld (I think they did this with Monster Hunter and maybe Bravely Default) or expand if they can not or are not willing to spend some $.

Or not have a barren first year launch window for their next consoles.
