Forums - Sales Discussion - Did DMC4 360 really outsell the PS3 version in EU?

Despite the still almost twice as large install base for the 360 in the UK in January (according to VGChartz more than twice as large), an interesting software sales analys (January 2008):

FULL PRICE FORMAT SHARE (units)

1. Wii (21.2%)
2. PC (18.6%)
3. Xbox 360 (16.0%)
4. DS (15.9%)
5. PS3 (14.9%)
6. PS2 (8.0%)
7. PSP (5.2%)
8. Mac (0.3%)

FULL PRICE FORMAT SHARE (value)

1. Wii (22.1%)
2. PC (20.9%)
3. Xbox 360 (17.3%)
4. PS3 (16.9%)
5. PSP (16.9%)
6. DS (12.4%)
7. PS2 (5.9%)
8. Mac (0.7%)

PS3 vs 360 full price software sales are getting close between the two platforms. The PS2 performs relatively weak in the UK, but bugdet priced software sells better.

given this history of vg overrating 360 and underrating anything PS3

i really doubt it.

For people who honestly, TRULY believe that VGC is 100% correct.....is it not impossible for VGC to be INcorrect? I mean, the January NPD numbers really didn't match up to VGC, so is it not logical to say there MAY be some hiccups in some numbers?

I agree VGChartz data was too much off compared to NPD's data, all we can do is provide pointers for VGChartz to better make their estimates and update the figures.

It was off considerably for the UK as well (Chart Track has data for 90% of the UK market, often publicly shared through MCV):

MCV (reported a couple of weeks ago):

"ChartTrack has also revealed that the Sony console has been outselling 360 for the last month. “It has been outselling 360 for the last four weeks, but they were neck and neck over the Christmas period, weeks 49-52,” said ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch."

Also Australian figures are off for 2007, the PS3 was in 183K Austalian homes by the end of 2007, considerably outselling the 360 (VGChartz is still hasn't hit that figure nearly two full months later).

Sydney Morning Herald (reported a while ago):

"The install base for PS3 in Australia is now 190,000, which includes 30,000 consoles given away with Bravia television sets in a post-Christmas promotion that dramatically lifted sales of Sony's LCD TVs and saw Sony Computer Entertainment scrambling to get sufficient console stocks to satisfy demand."

PS3Vault regarding 2007 sales:

“On the Bravia PS3 offer, we’re now up to 28,000-plus - these are audited numbers from Sony. They have taken about a 30 percent market in flat screens for the month of January off the back of that promotion,” said SCE Australia boss Michael Ephraim.

Recent figures from Sony showed that over 155,000 PS3s were sold in Australia last year, but Ephraim pointed out that the 28,000 units given away in the Bravia deal are not part of this figure, because industry data tracker GfK Australia “doesn’t report on a console if it’s given away free”.

North America, UK and Australia are the 360's by far strongest markets, but the actual situation is far better than the picture VGChartz painted for January. Japan is the easiest region to track with regular reports, European mainland is hard to track but there are clear pointers for how the PS3 performs in comparison with the 360.

What I found strange , it's that vgchartz gives 24 000 for DMC (PS3) although it is in the top 10 everywhere and was sold by 14 000 just in Italy !

Also worth noting Assassin's Creed not in this top 10 was the PS3's 3rd best selling title, it broke 100K the week before for Italy. (100.550 LTD - 04.02. - 10.02.2008)

PS3 vs 360 sales

Based on VGChartz reported data Italy accounts for over 15% of worldwide (minus North America and Japan) PS3 DMC4 sales, IMO that doesn't sound right. Based on PS2 data you will rather expect Italy to account for ~10% of sales for Europe alone.

Mike, have you played the game yet? I really doubt it. So, why don't you go and play the game instead of creating desperate threads? Capcom has gone multi entirely, and all others will follow! That's what numbers say! So, go play this REALLY MEDIOCRE game, and GET A LIFE! (i dumbed it in the middle, you know why ;)

Grow up. Do you care about games sales data or don't you?

Personally I follow 360/PS3 sales trends and always loved statistics, why not try to add something constructive relevant to this website yourself instead?

AFAIK, Capcom was always a multi-platform company, I remember them that way since the Amiga days. It was expected similar as with Rockstar (even released GTA III for the XBox), this may change when it makes sense for them to do so.
