Forums - General - Doctor Who....Where should I start?

I want to get into the series, but I don't want to start from the beginning. Netflix has the seasons from 2005-2011, so should I just start from there or go farther back? I also see that they have the doctors fom 1964 to 1989, so I MIGHT check a few of those doctors out at some point far down the line.

Start with Series 5 of the Reboot.  Fish fingers and Custard.

I'd recommend just going right into the 2005 series. While it is a sequel to the original, it was made 20 years later so it was written to be watchable with no knowledge of the 60's to 80's series. The first few episodes of the 2005 series are rather slow, and a tad dated by now, but things really pick up by episode 6.

If you are in a rush to catch up it's possible to start with series 5 (2010), but Season 8 isn't planned to start until some time in the second half of this year, so you have plenty of time :)

Did you get to see it in theaters? it was awesome in 3d.

I started Doctor Who not that long ago from the 2005 series. i have been trying to watch Classic Doctor Who but I just cannot stand it at all Mind you, I have only been watching the very first series so that might be the reason why I can't get into the old ones but we'll see.

just start now,the new one can be your doctor,my doctor is from way back

Yeah i did :D Seeing as DW's budget is generally around £3.67 and a bag of chips per episode, i was quite surprised by how good the 3D was :p

Thanks for the advice. I'm about to start the third episode of the 2005 season/series. The first two episodes were kind of....yeah. It's interesting so far, but a bit dated. The acting an special effects actually seem like they're from the 90's, so I'm guessing the budget wasn't very big. Eccleston also has some weird facial expressions at times, which kind of throws me off from his character. It's like he can't help having his mouth open for no reason.

I don't have to go to work until next Monday, so I plan on sticking though until I at least finish this season before I decide whether I want to continue with the show or not.

The moves that push 3D are big budget action films. During the action scenes the 3D gets all... bleh... in my opinion. I think 3D could be awesome if it was used in more movies like The Day of the Doctor. I bought it in 3D havent had a chance to rewatch it in 3d yet though. I will Friday.

The budget was small. You will see a drastic improvement next series. The producer(?) was trying to convince people the doctor can still be enjoyable after a 10 year hiatus

I'm not a huge Dr Who fan but I'm currently watching some early William Hartnell episodes. Nostalgia is a big part of it. My favourite doctor is also Tom Baker. He was a joy to watch even if the sets did appear to consist of bacofoil covered detergent bottles.

As others have said, start with Eccleston. (watching the old episodes for the first time now will make them seem dated, that and a chunk of them are missing)

Although I think Eccleston had some of the poorest episodes (Rose, and the Slitheen eps), he was a good Doctor. Shame he only did 1 series as it started getting consitantly good in series 2 & 3.

My favourite episodes: (bold are the particularly special ones)

Series 1:
The End of the World
Dalek
Parting of the Ways

Series 2:
The Girl in the Fireplace
The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit (double ep storyline)
Love & Monsters

Series 3:
Smith & Jones
42
Blink

The Sound of  Drums

Series 4:
The Doctor's Daughter
Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead
The Stolen Earth

Specials:
Planet of the Dead
The Waters of Mars

Series 5:
The Eleventh Hour
Amy's Choice
The Lodger

Series 6:
The Impossible Astronaut
The Rebel Flesh

Series 7:
The Doctor, the Widow & the Wardrobe
Asylum of the Daleks
Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS
The Name of the Doctor
