Never had that problem. There's a rest button on the back of the controller. Try pressing that and then sync it again with the ps4.

I'd bring it right back to the store and tell them it's defective.

buy a ps eye or if you want to use a controller to play games you can always buy a ps3

Tried this, did nothing... it's still happening, the controller just decides not to respond whatsoever (Aside from the Playstation button) when I boot a game...

Sounds like you may have a bad one. Did you buy from amazon? If so tell them about it, heard they would send out a new one no questions asked.
